ISLAMABAD: A three-member committee formed by the International Islamic University (IIUI) to probe the Israeli stall saga at an event at the varsity last month has recommended action against responsible faculty members and students.

The committee, headed by IIUI Rector Masoom Yasinzai, also concluded that no ‘foreign’ hand or ‘outsider’ was involved in the episode, which provoked uproar in the university and in some circles in the country.

On October 25, female IIUI students representing Israel at the mock global moot drew the ire of members of a religious student party as well as diplomats of some Islamic countries. The incident led to the cancellation of the event’s last day and promises of ‘strict action’ against those found to be ‘propagating Israel’.

Three officials, including students’ adviser (female) Tasneem Fatima, Faculty of Management Sciences Dean Bashir Khan and research associate Afsheen Jalil  were suspended for three months after the episode.

According to an official, the case of the students who represented Israel has been sent to the students’ disciplinary committee for further action.

The committee has recommended action against the responsible persons under the government’s set rules.

The three-day event was organised by the Faculty of Management Sciences (female) at the IIUI Faisal Mosque campus.

The probe report has been forwarded to the presidency and the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training as well.

A second committee consisting of Higher Education Commission Chairperson Mukhtar Ahmad and others will also probe the matter.

When contacted, Yasinzai refused to share findings of the report saying “it might affect findings of the second probe body”.

The issue was also raised in the National Assembly and several academics criticised the IIUI administration of coming down hard on students who were following the norms of MUNs around the country by representing Israel at the mock UN assembly sessions.

For a long while I kept assuming the investigation was about people involved in disrupting the Israel stall. I think Lewis Carol had Pakistan in mind when he envisioned wonderland.

Yasinzai and Mukhtar Ahmad would be well advised to probe themselves. They have already probed the students.
