FAISALABAD: Police said on Saturday that a man had killed his sister and her former husband in Batala Colony area.

The Batala Colony station house officer (SHO) told reporters that Memoona Riaz, a resident of Elahiabad, had been in a relationship with Fida Hussain, also a resident of Elahiabad. He said she had eloped and gotten married to him a month ago against the wishes of her family.

The SHO said her family had organised a punchayat in this regard a few days ago. He said the woman had returned to her house after the couple’s families reached a settlement in the punchayat. The SHO said Shahbaz Ali, Riaz’s brother, had shot Hussain late on Friday after seeing him at their house. He said he had shot his sister too after she tried to save him. The SHO said they had died on the way while being taken to a hospital.

The SHO said a police team had taken the bodies in custody. He said the bodies had been sent to a mortuary for autopsy. The SHO said a case had been registered and further action would be taken on the receipt of a medico-legal report.  He said a team had been constituted to nab the suspect.

Rafiq Ahmed, an uncle of Memoona, told The Express Tribune that she had gotten married to Hussain a month ago.

He said he had later divorced her in a punchayat. However he said the couple had continued seeing each other. He said Ali had killed them after he saw them in a compromising position.

City Police Officer (CPO) Sohail Habib Tajik has directed the Batala Colony SHO to arrest the suspect in 48 hours.
