KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday gave the federal and provincial authorities three weeks to file comprehensive and detailed reports on enforcement of special persons’ rights.

A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, heard a petition filed by a group of special citizens seeking enforcement of the Disabled Persons (Employment and Rehabilitation) Ordinance 1981.

Amin Muhammad and others pleaded to the court to order relevant authorities to implement the ordinance concerning employment of people with disabilities.

The petitioners submitted that on December 29, 1981, the Disabled Persons (Employment & Rehabilitation) Ordinance was promulgated for the rehabilitation and welfare of disabled persons but the government had failed to enforce the rights of the disabled.

The petitioners said that it had been settled in the law that a one percent quota would be reserved for disabled persons but the federal and provincial governments were denying them their rights.

The hearing was adjourned till November 20.
