FAISALABAD:

Nearly 100 residents of Mansoorabad on Friday staged a demonstration, protesting against Gulberg police for allegedly killing a man in a fake encounter.

The protesters gathered at Abdullah Pur Chowk and blocked Jaranwala Road for traffic.

They chanted slogans against police and demanded the resignation of Gulberg police station house officer.

Rana Masood Ahmad told newsmen that his brother, Rana Naveed, was returning home after purchasing medicine for his 18-year-old daughter on October 16 when some policemen in plainclothes stopped him and took him to Gulberg police station.

“When we contacted the police, we were told that Naveed was wanted in a case and would be released after investigations were complete,” he said.

He said later Naveed was taken to an unknown location and was not allowed to meet his family.

He said on the night of October 22, Naveed was killed in a fake encounter at ABC Road.

He said police had told them that he was trying to escape after a robbery when he was shot dead.

Masood said Naveed had two young children and was citizen. He said the chief minister should take notice of the case and dismiss the Gulberg station house officer.

Madina Town Superintendent Nasir Sial led a police team and negotiated with the protesters.

He assured them that Naveed’s case would be investigated and action would be taken against police officials if they were found guilty of killing a man in custody.

He appointed Sargodha Road Additional SP Saood Magsi as inquiry officer and directed him to investigate the case and submit a report as soon as possible. He said policemen were supposed to protect citizens and those found abusing their power would be taken to task.

The protesters then dispersed peacefully.

When contacted, Gulberg SHO Siddiq Cheema said Naveed died after he was caught red-handed during a robbery. He said his accomplices had escaped.

He said murder and robbery cases against Naveed had been registered at Civil Lines police station, Gulberg police station and Mansoorabadabad police station.
