PESHAWAR:

Members and fellows of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have condemned the decision of the Sindh government to set up its very own Sindh College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.

An emergency meeting of CPSP fellows, members and supervisors from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) was held on Tuesday at the CPSP Regional Centre Peshawar. The meeting was attended by delegates from the public and private sector as well as the Pakistan Army.

Participants discussed the issue of “dividing the CPSP”—some going as far as saying those with vested interests were trying to do so. CPSP Regional Director and Councillor Professor Mumtaz Ali Marwat also briefed the meeting. He said on October 10, in a meeting chaired by Higher Education Commission Sindh, it was decided to set up the Sindh College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.

Marwat stated the CPSP is the only umbrella institution which is of international repute and due to its high standards, it is capable of competing with similar institutions in developed countries. “The CPSP gained its current status after the untiring efforts of all fellows, members and supervisors over the past 52 years,” he added.

All participants were unanimous in the desire to protect the status of CPSP at any cost. It was agreed at the meeting that the said matter will be raised at every relevant forum and all necessary legal and constitutional measures shall be taken to safeguard the interests of CPSP. A national convention of all fellows, members and postgraduate residents will be arranged in Islamabad over this matter.

The resolution passed at the meeting stated: “We the fellows and members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan strongly condemn the establishment of Sindh College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and resolve that CPSP should remain intact.”

Members added CPSP’s name and assets cannot be divided. The current status of CPSP should remain intact so its status and recognition at the national and international level is not affected.
