FAISALABAD: City Police Officer (CPO) Sohail Habib Tajik said on Friday that friction between police and some politicians was inevitable.

He was speaking to journalists. Tajik said some politicians wielded great influence at police stations. He said they got officers of their choice appointed to further their political ends.

Tajik said this made friction between them natural. He said it was necessary to introduce reforms in the department as some politicians had provided corrupt officials with opportunities to abuse authority.

Tajik said he had seen a luxury vehicle stop at the venue of a Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) rally in Faisalabad. He said he had initially thought that PAT chief Tahirul Qadri had arrived at the venue. Tajik said he had later discovered that the vehicle was being used by a police official.

He said the size of the force had not been increased in relation to population growth. Tajik said the strength of the police was still the same as it was in 2004. He said this required one official to police 450 citizens.

Tajik said 5,000 officials were policing eight million people in Faisalabad. He said it was imperative to recruit an additional 2,000 officials to secure Faisalabad.

Tajik said 10,000 criminals had been let off by the courts in the city.

He said they had had been let off despite being caught red-handed. Tajik said the courts had been reduced to issuing injunction in civil cases and granting bails in criminal cases.

He said this had allowed those involved in offences like murder and robbery to get out of prison within months of their arrest.

Tajik said the incidence of framing innocent people in false cases had also increased. He said 80 per cent of cases registered against women had turned out to be false. Tajik said the cases had been registered to settle personal scores.
