Khoobsurat gets happily-ever-after at the box office

Positive word-of-mouth garners profit for the Fawad Khan-starrer film.

NEW DELHI: Actors Fawad Khan and Sonam Kapoor can revel in the news that their latest offering Khoobsurat has been declared a hit in India. The film has made sufficient domestic profit to be ranked among Bollywood box-office success, thanks to positive word-of-mouth.

Anil Kapoor and his daughter Rhea had joined hands with Walt Disney Studios to co-produce Khoobsurat, which is a remake of the 1980 Rekha-starrer eponymous film. Khoobsurat, which was made with a modest budget of INR120 million, was released across 800 domestic screens on September 19. In India alone, it has collected INR190 million after one week.

The film was also released in 18 international territories, including North America, Britain and Pakistan, on nearly 300 screens, and had minted over $2 million in global earnings till Thursday. Vice president and head of marketing and distribution at Studios — Disney India, Amrita Pandey, said that Khoobsurat appealed to audiences of all age groups, making it a “great family entertainer”. “In India, the movie saw a great growth trajectory at the box office, as collections doubled from its release on Friday till Monday,” she said.

“What is even more special is the response the movie has garnered in the international markets, especially in the United Kingdom, Pakistan and North America, reiterating the fact that the appeal of a great story is universal,” Amrita added. “A well-planned release strategy and positive word-of-mouth has propelled the movie even more. The casting and treatment of the movie also had a global appeal.”
