KARACHI: Information and local government minister Sharjeel Memon kicked off a cleanliness drive at Merewether Tower on Monday.

A large number of people were gathered at the occasion as the minister spoke to the crowd and answered their questions.

Memon explained that all district municipal corporations in Karachi and taluka municipal administrations (TMA) across Sindh are receiving their funds and their shares of the Octroi and Zila Tax properly. "I feel proper utilisation of funds in public interest is not taking place," he said. "That's why problems of cleanliness have occurred."

The minister directed all the TMAs, municipal commissioners and administrators to take personal efforts to make the cleanliness drive successful. "The one-month target is to make our cities, towns and villages neat and clean," he said, clarifying that the drive will continue after that as well.

He also urged the heads of local bodies to take appropriate measures to control dengue, congo and Naegleria. Memon said he had received reports of misappropriation of funds in certain departments. "I would not spare any officer involved in corruption," he said. The minister assured the people that they would see a difference within one month.
