EPl: Arsenal looking for first victory after opening day

Gunners take on Villa in hopes of improving seventh-place standing

BIRMINGHAM: After three consecutive league draws, Arsene Wenger will be hoping to get his Arsenal side back on track against Aston Villa on Saturday as defeat to Borrussia Dortmund in midweek raised further questions over their ability to win silverware this season.

Arsenal travel to Villa Park to face a Villa side who are second in the Premier League with three wins from four matches.

If the Gunners are to come away with three points, then they will have to improve on their recent form that sees them languishing in seventh place.

Arsenal's defensive weaknesses have been exposed in recent fixtures, and Wenger’s failure to bring in sufficient defensive recruitment has been highlighted by injuries at the back.

The Dortmund defeat was the Gunners' first of the campaign, who were unbeaten in 14 matches when they travelled to the Westfalenstadion. However, they have won just two of their last seven competitive matches, and the manner of the defeat would surely have concerned Wenger.

However, last year’s star, Aaron Ramsey, has continued from where he left off and the 23-year-old is cherishing the role of Arsenal’s talisman.

“I've got a lot more responsibility and I've become used to that and it feels good,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Villans would be looking to keep up their good early season form and cause yet another upset after their 1-0 win at Anfield last time out.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert recently committed his future to the club and the uncertainty that surrounded Villa Park seems to have lifted.

Liverpool aiming to recover from last week’s defeat

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists he has no concerns over Philippe Coutinho's ability to handle the physical side of the Premier League ahead of his team's clash with West Ham on Saturday.

Coutinho was given some roughed up in Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Anfield last weekend, which appeared to knock him off his game.

However, Rodgers claimed the diminutive Brazilian playmaker can deal with that aspect of the game ahead of another potentially tough afternoon against the Hammers at Upton Park.

Liverpool have also been boosted by return of centre-back Martin Skrtel after a knee injury, while right-back Glen Johnson is also poised to return to training after a hip problem, although Saturday's game is likely to be too soon for him.

Meanwhile, West Ham manager Sam Allardyce admits to having mixed feelings about the departure of Luis Suarez; he is relieved his side do not have to face the Uruguay international this weekend but also feels the move has had a detrimental effect on the league.
