KARACHI: Two more polio cases surfaced in Karachi on Wednesday increasing the total number of cases in the country to 164.

The first case was confirmed from Union Council number 8 of Gadap Town where a 10-month old boy, Umar, son of Akramullah, tested positive for the virus. This is the fourth case from the same union council.

In the second case, a 22-month old girl, Hajra, daughter of Amir Khan, tested positive from Union Council number 7 of Orangi Town. This is the second case from this union council.

So far this year, 115 cases have been reported from Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata), 29 from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 14 from Sindh, three from Balochistan and two from Punjab.

Dr Durre Naz Jamal, Deputy Programme Manager Sindh for Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI), said that these cases were expected and more cases were likely to surface.

Due to security reasons, Jamal said 100% target was not being achieved in high security areas during vaccination drives.
