KARACHI:

Pakistan’s solitary win in the lost tie against hosts Thailand at the Davis Cup Asia- Oceania Zone Group II final came from Samir Iftikhar on Sunday.

The team played its first Group final after being relegated from Group I in 2006.

Iftikhar won the dead rubber against Pruchya Isarow 6-4, 3-6, 1-1 after the Thai player retired from the match.

Pakistan ended the competition 4-1.

Earlier in the day, Mohammad Abid lost to Dania Udomchoke 6-0, 6-1 in a one-sided match.

Pakistan saved seasoned players Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Aqeel khan from playing the dead rubbers in order to give a chance to the youngsters.

Pakistan began the tie with two defeats in the singles rubbers on day one, and failed to emulate their performance from the previous tie against Philippines, where the team bounced back into the competition with a doubles rubber.

However in the final, Thailand sealed the win with a 3-0 lead on day two through the doubles rubber.

Let me hope that India which is locked 2-2 in a promotion battle to move from Group I to the highest level of the Davis Cup, the World Group, beats Serbia and gets promoted.
