Community service: VU to promote sense of civic duty under Talloires movement

The Taillores Network aims to engage higher education institutions in civic and social responsibility initiatives

Virtual University of Pakistan has joined the Pakistan chapter of the Talloires Network, a global movement comprising higher education institutions that aim to promote civic responsibility.


The Taillores Network, formed in 2005, aims to engage higher education institutions in civic and social responsibility initiatives. It has over 300 members in 72 countries across the world and claims an enrolment of over six million students worldwide. The Pakistan chapter of the network is based at the Islamabad Campus of National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), under the Higher Education Commission. Launched recently in Pakistan, the PCTN aspires to engage higher education institutions in civic and social responsibilities to promote a spirit of community service among students and higher education institutions.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the VU said that the university had become a member of the Pakistan chapter of the network. It said they would aim to build and promote the culture of volunteerism in the university. The steering committee of the Pakistan chapter is chaired by the rector of NUST, Muhammad Asghar. The vice chancellors, rector and directors of Gomal University Dera Ismail Khan, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, Government College University Faisalabad, Bahria University, Karakoram International University Gilgit and Sukkur Institute of Business Administration and part of the committee. “Virtual University of Pakistan is committed to promoting community service, civic engagement and service learning in higher educations under the strategic focus provided by the HEC.” According to the VU’s public relations office the varsity has encouraged students and faculty to contribute to the society.
