NUST convocation : Hundreds awarded engineering degrees

Students lauded for securing positions at international events.

The college of electrical and mechanical engineering of the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) held its 20th convocation of its 32nd undergraduate programme on Thursday.

NUST Rector Lt Gen (retd) Mohammad Asghar was the chief guest on the occasion where faculty members, students and parents were also in attendance.

Asghar lauded the college for providing exceptional skills to graduating students in the disciplines of electrical, mechanical, computer and mechatronics engineering.

He also appreciated the college for its emphasis on research and development both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The college’s commandant, Brig Jamil Sarwar Malik, lauded his students for securing positions at international events such as at IIT Bombay Techfest, Shell Eco-Marathon, Asia Pacific ICT Alliance, ROBOCUP and International Competition on Future Flight Design.

Malik appreciated the performance of the students at national events as well, such as the Lipton Talent Hunt, National ElectroniX Olympiad, IET Present Around the World, NERC, COMPPEC and Robo-Nav.

He highlighted the pioneering implementation of outcome-based education by the college and said this had paved the way for Pakistan to become a member of the Washington Accord.

Two hundred and sixty six degrees were awarded to undergraduate students in the disciplines of electrical, mechanical, computer and mechatronics engineering and outstanding students were awarded medals. Salman Ahmed (Electrical Engineering), Zulkeefaal Dar (Mechanical Engineering), Muhammad Usama Azhar (Computer Engineering) and Hira Afzal (Mechatronics Engineering) were awarded the Prime Minister’s Gold Medal for their outstanding performance in academics. Dar was also awarded the President’s Gold Medal for being the overall best student. Muhammad Abrar (Mechatronics Engineering) was conferred the Chief of Army Staff Gold Medal for Best Technical Cadet of the year.

Students were also awarded gold medals for their projects. Muhammad Usama bin Sajid (Electrical Engineering), Muhammad Saqib Anwar (Mechanical Engineering), Khawaja Waleed Iqbal (Computer Engineering) and Amir Ghafoor (Mechatronics Engineering) clinched the Rector’s Gold Medal for best projects in their respective disciplines.
