Targeted attacks: Four militants among eight shot dead in the city

The Rangers also arrested three men from Rasheedabad and Pakhtunabad.

KARACHI: Around eight people, including four militants were gunned down in the city on Saturday night.

The Rangers claim to have killed four militants in two separate encounters in the city. According to the Rangers spokesperson, the militants were killed in a targeted raid carried out by the Rangers at their hideouts. He said that the men were involved in killing policemen in Orangi, Banaras, Mominabad and SITE.

Two of the militants were identified as Zeeshan and Khalid Jan. They died in Pirabad, Orangi Town in an exchange of fire. The spokesperson added that they found out that Zeeshan and Jan were planning to target more law enforcers. He claimed that they seized bombs and explosives from them.

Two other militants were killed near Zia Morr, SITE. The Rangers claim to have seized hand grenades, a magnetic improvised explosive device and other weapons from them. In Pakhtunabad and Rasheedabad, the Rangers arrested three militants during targeted raids. They were taken to an undisclosed location for questioning.

Killings

Two leaders of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) were shot dead in Karnal Basti near Old Sabzi Mandi within the limits of the PIB Colony police station.

The deceased were identified as Qari Abdul Raheem, a prayer leader, and his friend Noor Zaman Shah.

As news of their death spread, it led to a lot of chaos in the area as people came out on main University Road to protest and blocked the road. The protesters burnt tyres and also pelted passing vehicles with stones. The protest which went on for nearly seven hours was led by ASWJ's central leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui. He also led the funeral prayers of the deceased.

ASWJ's spokesperson told The Express Tribune that the men were killed by drug dealers operating in the area.

The protest ended after the police assured the party that they would cooperate with them. DSP Nasir Lodhi told them that the police would take action against the alleged drug dealers and that a case would be registered. Till the filing of this report, however, no case was registered.

In an unrelated incident an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was killed in Pathan Colony, SITE. The police claim that the deceased was posted at the Central Police Office and lived in the same area. They added that the ASI was on his way home after buying milk when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at him. He was shot at multiple times and died on the spot. Three people who were also present at the scene of crime - Sawera, Emaan and Iqbal, 24, were injured and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital with the deceased.

Separately, another policeman was shot dead in Sultanabad, Manghopir. The deceased was identified as 38-year-old Hameed Sumar. He was on his way back to Balochistan where he was posted. He was in the city visiting relatives when unidentified men shot and killed him.
