Cleric gunned down in Rawalpindi

CM Punjab has taken notice of the incident and sought a report.

RAWALPINDI: A cleric was gunned down near Khayaban-e-Sir Syed in Rawalpindi on Tuesday evening, Express News reported.

According to details, Maulana Izharul Haq Farooqi, the vice president of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Banny Chowk Unit, was returning home after visiting another ASWJ leader Farooq Muavia at the Holy Family Hospital. Gunmen riding on a motorcycle intercepted and attacked him near Khayaban-e-Sir Syed.

The attackers managed to flee from the scene.

IG Punjab took notice of the incident and has asked RPO Rawalpindi to submit a report. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif aslo took notice of the attack and has sought a report on the incident.

Rescue 1122 shifted the body to hospital, where doctors handed the body over his heirs after conducting postmortem.

A number of ASWJ members have been targeted recently. Last Thursday, unidentified armed men gunned down an activist of ASWJ and injured two others in Quetta. The incident resulted in killing of Khalil Ahmed and injuring Zahoor Ahmed and Shehzad.
