PESHAWAR: Employees from various government departments  on Wednesday, protested on GT Road and later held a sit-in outside the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building, asking for promotions and a review in service structure.

Commuters faced problems for five hours as traffic backed up and needed to be diverted from Sher Shah Suri Road to Dabgari Road.

The protest later ended up outside the assembly. Angry demonstrators chanted slogans against the provincial government.

They condemned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for discrimination in upgradation.

One of the employee union’s leader, Malik Naveed, was present at the protest. Addressing the crowd, he said the government has failed in its promises regarding growth of technical and non-technical government employees.

While some departments had benefited, others were failed as promises made before the budget were not upheld, said Naveed.

"If our demands are not accepted, we will extend our agitation circles,” said one protester.
