KARACHI:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reaffirmed its faith in Moin Khan when the former captain was appointed for an important dual role as the chief selector and manager of the Pakistan team.

Moin served as the head coach during the Asia Cup and the World Twenty20 held in Bangladesh. The team failed to do well in both events, losing the final of the Asia Cup and made history by dropping out of the World Twenty20 in group stages for the first time.

T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez stepped down after Pakistan’s poor show at the mega event, accepting responsibility for a lacklustre show. A few days later, Rashid Latif decided to not take up the post of chief selector due to various conflicts with the PCB’s top management.

Meanwhile Zaheer Abbas, who was serving as the team’s batting consultant, was named the Principle Adviser to PCB Chairman Najam Sethi.

“The PCB is pleased to announce the appointment of Zaheer Abbas as Principle Adviser to the PCB Chairman and Moin Khan as the chief selector and manager of the national cricket team,” stated the official PCB press release.

Abbas, who is a member of the Management Committee of the PCB, will serve in an honorary position, while Moin will work on deputation from PIA.

Zaheer keen on lifting domestic cricket standard

Renowned as the Asian Don Bradman, Abbas said that one of his key focuses would be to lift the overall standard of domestic cricket as it is really important to move forward.

The 66-year-old said that there was a time when several world class players of Pakistan used to play county cricket, but now the players struggle to get good contracts even in local league cricket, something that needs to be addressed.

“I would definitely work with the chairman in order to improve the standard of our domestic cricket because it has gone down considerably in the last several years,” Abbas told The Express Tribune.

“When we’ll have competitive cricket at the domestic level, quality players will be produced automatically, who can serve the Pakistan team well.”

When asked what would be his advice regarding the 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia, Abbas explained that proper planning would be required if the national team wants to taste success on the bouncy pitches of Australia.

PCB sets up committee for coaching positions

The board has also set up a committee to scrutinise and evaluate the applications for various cricketing positions – including positions of head coach, batting coach, fielding coach, spin-bowling Consultant, strength and conditioning coach and sports physiotherapist – advertised recently.

The committee comprises Moin, Director Domestic Cricket Intikhab Alam and Director Game Development Haroon Rashid. The committee will make its recommendations to the PCB chairman after the cut-off date of May 5 for the applications.

This is good; Discipline will prevail in the team, as Team Manager has now power of dropping a player; Good decision

Moin is double dipping just like Inti. Why can't we provided employment to new people instead of the same person with multiple salaries?
