KARACHI:

A dengue control programme comprising five phases will be launched in Sindh, announced the local bodies secretary. This drive will include vector control, health awareness education, biological control, administrative steps and diagnosing dengue virus.

In the first phase, the fumigation staff will be trained about vector control and the monitoring system will be improved. In the second phase, the authorities will hold a public awareness session in educational institutions and air informative programmes about the dengue viral fever in print and electronic media.

Distribution points will be made for fish - such as the guppy - which eat the larvae of mosquitos that spread dengue, as part of its biological control phase. All the administrative officers have been advised to not let water stand anywhere in the city under the programme's administrative steps.

Practical steps are needed to curb the dengue viral fever in Karachi and the government should implement them to save citizens from diseases and infections, said senior medical practitioner and PMA leader Dr Samrina Hashmi.

Dr Hashmi, who is implementing the programme in collaboration with the concerned departments, said that no large-scale health project has been completed in the province by the government in the past six years. She also said that the sanitation system in city is in a severely deteriorated condition.
