Matthew McConaughey is certainly having a great year so far. Not only did he pick up an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, but HBO series True Detective has been a runaway smash hit. However, Matthew disappointed his fans when he confirmed that he definitely will not be returning for True Detective's second series.

The next season will have a new face as a replacement for him. The lead role for this series is currently one of the most coveted in Hollywood, owing to the success and scope of the HBO drama, which will start afresh with a new case and new police investigators for its second outing. Whoever takes over in the lead role for season two is going to have some pretty big shoes to fill.

True Detective has lured film stars over to the small screen for its first series: with Oscar-wininng McConaughey playing the conflicted misanthropist Rust Cohle, opposite Oscar-nominated Woody Harrelson as his former CID partner Martin Hart. Hollywood Life’s source also said that the Cary Fukunaga-directed show could lure over other big screen A-listers: “It’s the show everyone wants to be on, because the writing and the roles are just so exquisite and complex.”

Rumour has it that Brad Pitt is the first choice to take on the second season of the show. McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s acting partnership made the first season such an explosive hit, and it's not out of the realms of possibility that the 12 Years a Slave director could be eyed as a replacement.

According to Hollywood Life, a source revealed: "Brad’s name has come up many times, it’s just a matter of what his other commitments are. Brad has tight relations with HBO — he teamed up with Ryan Murphy last year to produce the HBO movie The Normal Heart. I know everyone would be thrilled to have him onboard."

The actor's casting is only in the very early stages and if the rumours are to be believed, the new detectives may not even be a pair, or male. Some rumours have suggested that there will be two female main characters next season.

True Detective has yet to be given a season two air date.

Neither Woody nor Matthew will be returning. There wasnt any intention in bringing them back. The show is designed to tell the story in 8 episodes. Its not meant to react to the popularity from season to season. There are plenty of shows that do that but its nice to have a show that focuses strictly on the art of storytelling without influence from ratings. I hope the next season is able to focus on the art of storytelling as well.

Where are you from Jean ? You may seems right because i usually don't go in-depth analysis but my question is if Woody can stay why not McConaughey, both made it an instant hit.
