ISLAMABAD:
A national consultation workshop to review the “Waseela-e-Rozgar” initiative of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was held at its secretariat on Monday, said a press release.
“The initiative will be designed in a way that lifts the maximum number of people out of poverty”, said BISP Chairman Enver Baig while presiding over the workshop.
In a bid to eradicate poverty, the government will train people to help them get employment in the local market, he said.
The BISP chief said that they will involve various chambers of commerce and industry who will help determine the kinds of trainings.
“Previously, the initiative was poorly planned and executed. There was no data available on whether the past trainings had helped increase the employment,” Baig asserted.
The programme is now being restructured and improved to benefit the poor and needy people, Baig said.

This BISP is a very good program, parts of it have been modeled on programs like Progressa in Mexico which have yielded great results. The problem with this program seems not to be the planning but the implementation and the corruption involved.
