PESHAWAR:

A prominent Shia cleric was shot dead in Dhaki Nalbandi area of the city on Monday.

The police said two unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at Maulana Alam Al Moosavi Al Mashadi and left him wounded. He was taken to Lady Reading Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries 25 minutes later. They added the maulana was roaming around in the area without any security despite repeated warnings from law enforcement agencies that his life could be in danger.

Maulana Alam was around 55 years old and used to lead prayers at the Mohallah Khudadad Mosque.

The police believe that this is yet another case of a target killing. Last week a bank manager was killed in a similar manner as he made his way towards the parking lot at work.

The Imamia Rabita Council issued a statement saying that this was a part of the on-going series of attacks which had recently gripped the country.
