MADRID: Lionel Messi scored his third and fourth Champions League goals of the season as Spanish champions Barcelona defeated FC Copenhagen 2-0 to move to the top of Group D.

Messi scored a long-range opener in the 19th minute and a stoppage time tap-in as Barcelona inflicted a first group defeat on Copenhagen and go a point above the Danish side that had won their first two group games.

The 2009 champions had some tough moments at 1-0 as they failed to kill off the match, but Messi managed to score his second in the dying seconds of the match after a mis-hit cross from Eric Abidal landed at his feet.

Despite the loss Copenhagen have a great chance of qualifying for the knockout phase for the first time in their history lying four points ahead of Rubin Kazan and five points ahead of Panathinaikos.

United’s moment of relief

Manchester United defeated Turkish side Bursaspor 1-0 courtesy a first-half goal from Nani that leaves the English giants comfortably on course to qualify from Group C, with seven points from three games.

While United dominated possession for long periods, a starting midfield featuring Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Anderson was rarely able to break down Bursaspor. Federico Macheda struggled to impose himself in attack and it was left to Nani to provide much of the attacking threat.

Inter edge out Spurs

Inter Milan edged out 10-man Tottenham 4-3 at home.

The reigning champions romped to a 4-0 lead as Samuel Eto’o notched a brace after Javier Zanetti’s opening goal and Dejan Stankovic added the fourth, all before half-time.

But soon after the match saw Gareth Bale’s brilliant solo cameo while Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was dismissed after just eight minutes.

Meanwhile, FC Twente drew with Werder Bremen 1-1 and Rangers shared the same scoreline against Valencia. Lyon beat Benfica 2-0, Schalke defeated Hapoel Tel Aviv 3-1, and Panathinaikos and Rubin Kazan played out a goalless draw.
