Targeted killing? Police register FIR of Allama Abbas' murder

Shia Ulema Council demands judicial inquiry in to the attack. Allama Nasir Abbas' burial will be held in Multan.

MULTAN/ SARGODHA/ LAHORE: Garden Town police on Monday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two unidentified assailants under the anti-terrorism act for the murder of Shia leader Allama Nasir Abbas.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Munawar Hussain, Abbas's driver, who was in the car at the time of the attack.

In FIR number 1099, police have listed charges under section 302, 34 of Pakistan Penal Code and section-7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Allama Nasir Abbas, a resident of Multan, was shot dead by unknown assailants near the Ferozpur Road underpass in Lahore on Sunday night when he was returning to his home in Johar Town. While Allama Abbas suffered fatal wounds, his driver Munawar Hussain and Abbas' companion Najaf Abbas remained unhurt.

The driver immediately rushed injured Abbas to Sheikh Zayed Hospital but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Lahore Police said that initial investigations into the attack suggested that this was a targeted attack, however, it was premature to say anything more about the incident.

No arrests were reported till the filing of the report.

Burial to be held in Multan

The burial of Allama Nasir Abbas will be held on Tuesday at Williat Hussain College near Chungi No.14.

Allama Mohammad Abbas Qumi of Bhakkar will lead the prayers, said Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslameen secretary information Saqlain Naqvi.

His funeral was held in Lahore on Monday.

Judicial inquiry

The Shia Ulema Council (SUC) on Monday demanded that the government order a judicial inquiry into the murder of AllamaNasir Abbas.

President Shia Ulema Council Multan, Allama MujahidAbbas Gardezi claimed that the killing of Allama Nasir Abbas in Lahore was not an incident of sectarianism. He maintained that terrorists had killed Allama Nasir Abbas and the government should bring terrorists to justice.

Gardezi also announced a sit-in at Chungi No-9 to protest the incident.

Protests

After Allama Abbas’ body was handed over to his family, hundreds of protestors took his body to The Mall Road in front of Governor's House and blocked the road for several hours.

Separately in Sargodha, the Majis Wahdatul Muslimeen staged a protest rally on Khushab road.

Hundreds of protesters started a rally from Imambargah Block 7 and marched on Karkhana Bazaar, Katchery Bazaar and City Bazaar and staged a sit-in on Khushab road.

The protesters raised slogans against the killers and demanded the government immediately arrest them.
