The party said that the former mayor of Karachi was not in Pakistan and had notified the party leadership before leaving.
"Kamal had requested temporary time off from party duties and MQM had approved of his request," stated the Rabita Committee.
The press release refuted claims of a rift between Kamal and other members of the party and said that he had gone abroad because of personal problems.
MQM said that Kamal's efforts for the improvement of Karachi were appreciated.
"MQM chief Altaf Hussain wishes his personal problems get resolved soon so that he can return to party duties," concluded the statement.

@Khan: You, MQM phobics, call it illness, we call it passion and resoluteness. Time will tell. May you live long to see it.
Mustafa aur MQM ko nazar lag gai , no other party can dream of dynamic , dedicated young politian of similar capabilty, charisma and calibre , I am sad beyond words , he is pride of MQM and pride of karachi , may ALLAH keep him safe and blessed where ever he is
Best of luck to this guy...... Honestly worry for him.....
Eagles said it the best "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" Mustafa Kamal is probably hiding somewhere worried for his safety and life.
AAh! These comments give me great pleasure as these are, in an indirect way, admitting the class of MQM leadership and workers. Now declaring this resignation a great loss to MQM is recognition by opponents of MQM's reps abilities. BTW, he is busy making a decent livelihood for his family (which was also mentioned by Sethi Sb.) which is also a proof that he has not made money by corruption. After a while he will be more polished, more skilled, more experienced, and he will resume his responsibilties in party.
@Aysha M:
Muhajirs were very noble and cultured people. MQM ripped that all apart :(
Mustsafa Kamal ,Bana Maal, Zinda Bhag
@Arzoo yes we haq parast very badly treated , but would do the same as u said will vote for MQM , atleast MQM should not have treated us like this
I hope he is safe
Pray for his life, may God forbid but I suspect another Imran Farooq like ending.
@usman: There are many sensible, clean adn capable people in MQM who would do well in PTI and maybe even other mainstream parties but im sure you understand leaving MQM is not easy.
Pre-election MQMs rallying cry for votes was that do not ignore the good work done by Mustafa Kamal. Now there is no reason to support the party I suppose.
when you resign from mqm without the boss' approval - it's best you do so from the comforts of another country. funny.
I think MK is a good man and a good mayor - i would like for PTI to pick him up.
Whatever good came out of MQM in Karachi during the Musharraf era was almost single-handedly due to this guy. Without him, MQM stands to lose a lot of support in Karachi, so of course they don't want him to resign - but he probably knows better. Too bad, he was a great asset.
So it was true that he has resigned and not in Pakistan. Now how much truth is there that like other politicians he also has developed assets overseas - which of course can't be from thin air.
MQM is no more a party for competent people. I have seen all professional, hard working people getting pushed away by the old timers. So sad.
Great loss to MQM and Karachiiites. We will surely miss him. Party and workers have learned a lot from him. He kept Altaf Bhai's legacy going, Inshallah others will keep the same standards set by precedents with great momentum.
Consistent denials and then reluctant confirmation, what exactly does it mean???? It means contempt of ordinary people like you and me. They just think they can feed us anything and we will take it. Because they do not consider common folks intelligent enough to see through the façade of deceit and lies. More developed societies do not tolerate such behavior and do not forget it on election days when they kick out consistent liars and cheaters. No such luck in our societies. Remember Mohtarma's consistent denial that Surrey Palace does not belong to her???? And, then when the British Government was about to auction it off, she was right there claiming ownership????? Do you think it made a difference for a simple rural Sindhi or an urban PPP diehard when it came to voting them in??? Same way the urban diehard Haqparast will not care when he goes to vote in the next elections. We need more honesty and integrity in our political leaders and parties.
“In a statement, the MQM Rabitta Committee further clarified that Mustafa Kamal has been living abroad for the past several months citing personal engagements.”
If he is out of Pakistan for the past several months, therefore, he was not able to represent his constituency at the Senate, then, surely he is not clamming his salary as the Senator either, could you please confirm, Mr Kamal or MQM?
Anyone leaves MQM can't stay in Pakistan. such an irony. Isn't it how mafia operates?
When a respected individual like MK resigns, you know the party is in trouble.
Najam Sethi was right about something after all.
Well done Mustafa Kamal! Zinda bhag.
Any one who becomes more popular than the required level of popularity have to face the "Party Consequences".
Mustufa Kamal reached at the heights of polarity. The most difficult thing one faces bi the "Behari Party" is the back biting of colleagues and workers who neither work, nor they want to see any one working.
This is the height of politics and popularity of Mustufa Kamal that before the Local Bodies elections, he has not only been shown the gate to exit, but also the door to become second time Mayor of Karachi has been shut down once for all in the name of Accountability.
One can enter in MQM any time but then the door is shut for him to go out any move like a free person.
I am thinking about those MQM leaders who has joined MQM just to gain popularity.
Some people have a peculiar disease and no doctor can remove this particular diseases - the name of the disease is: To make photographs and then get it published in the local dailies and to always face the local TV cameras for one reason or the other.
Sensible people are leaving MQM! There is a strong rift between oldies (that went to jail and underground during operations) and the new comers who are better than the oldies. Where is Raza Haroon by the way??
You can get in, but there is no way out!
So Najam sathi was 110% correct!....
So the MQM has ultimately confirmed ET's news after initial denial. http://tribune.com.pk/story/639236/personal-reasons-mustafa-kamal-resigns-from-senate-seat/ Where there is smoke there is fire!
Why did MQM deny several times that he resigned since a month ago when rumours started? Why is he resigning from the Senate if “Kamal had requested temporary time off from party duties"? Clearly it seems he has fled Karachi in fear of ending up in a body bag.
