KARACHI: The arrest of former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Nadeem Hashmi led to scenes of violence and wide-scale closure of the city on Wednesday.

Earlier this morning, Hashmi was arrested during a raid carried out by the Karachi police at his residence. Other MQM workers were also arrested. A murder case was registered against the former MPA at the Hyderi police station.

The MQM coordination committee condemned the act and termed it a conspiracy against the party. The party's parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, Khawaja Izharul Hasan, said the Karachi police was acting against the framework provided by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain questioned the legitimacy of the arrest. Regretting that an MQM unit-in-charge was arrested for every tiny misdeed in the area, Hussain demanded the provincial government provide the legal grounds for Hashmi's arrest.

As activities in the city came to a halt, businesses, petrol pumps and shops remained closed for most of the day, while the All Private School Management Association (APSMA) announced a closure of all private schools. Three vehicles were torched by unknown men at Naagan Chowrangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Korangi.

As the day progressed, Rangers and police continued raiding various parts of the city and taking suspects under custody. Raids occurred from DHA and Lyari to Liaquatabad, Orangi Town, Buffer Zone and North Karachi.

Security forces also raided and surrounded the house of defunct Peoples Amn Committee (PAC) leader Uzair Jan Baloch in Lyari.
