Change at the helm: State Life chairman takes charge

KARACHI:

The federal government has appointed Javed Iqbal, a career policeman, as chairman of State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan, the largest life insurance player in the country, with immediate effect.

Iqbal has served as inspector general of Punjab police and his most recent assignment was in the ministry of interior. He assumed charge at the state-owned insurance company on Monday.

Sources say Iqbal is set to retire within three months. However, his appointment depends on the outcome of a petition that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz filed in the Supreme Court on Monday, challenging the appointments and transfers on key posts in state-owned organisations by the caretaker government.

State Life recorded unprecedented growth in first-year and renewal business during former chairman Shahid Aziz Siddiqi’s five-year tenure, which ended prematurely on May 6 with the sudden termination of his contract.
