The bomb was planted inside the building that was the venue for the rally of two national assembly candidates representing the JUI faction led by cleric Fazulur Rehman.
Hospital administrator Inayatullah Khan, told Reuters, that 25 people were killed in the blast and the death toll could rise because some victims were critically injured.
JUI-F leader Munir Orakzai, a former Fata lawmaker contesting from NA-38, and Ain u Din Shakir contesting from NA-37, were sitting on the stage when the blast took place.
Orakzai escaped unhurt while Shakir was slightly injured, Khan said.
The injured were shifted to Parachinar hospital.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility, saying its target had been the lawmaker elected as an independent but allied to the outgoing government.
"Basically it was an attack on Munir Orakzai, who was a part of the past government for five years," Taliban spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location.
"He supported the People's Party and ANP government which launched several operations against us," Ehsan told AFP.
The Pakistani Taliban have condemned the elections as unIslamic and directly threatened the main parties in the outgoing coalition, the Pakistan People's Party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Awami National Party (ANP).
Rehman and his JUI faction -- known as JUI-F -- have been a mediator between the authorities and the Taliban, blamed for killing thousands of Pakistanis in a domestic insurgency over the last six years.
Orakzai had joined the JUI-F in February this year. He contested elections from NA-38 tribal area-III, Kurram Agency and has remained undefeated in the previous two elections.
The attack in the Kurram region, an ethnic Pashtun area near the Afghan border, will raise questions about whether the Taliban have expanded their campaign beyond secular parties.
Pakistan's interim Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso strongly condemned the attack and said another national assembly candidate had been injured.
Repeated calls for candidates to be granted more security have failed to stop a wave of attacks, most of them claimed by the Pakistani Taliban.
The attack brings to 83 the number of people killed in attacks targeting politicians and political parties since April 11 ahead of Pakistan's general elections on Saturday, according to an AFP tally.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Background
Another JUI-F candidate Haji Mohammad Hashim Shahwani escaped an assassination attempt, on April 26, when his convoy was attacked by a remote-controlled bomb in the Mach district of Kachi in Balochistan.
Earlier on Thursday, Maulana Fazlur Rehman appealed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) not to carry out attacks on candidates from political parties including the Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Violence increased in the northwest as Pakistan prepares to hold a general election and provincial elections on May 11, which will mark the country’s first democratic transition of power.

@Frustrated: YOU ARE REALLY FRUSTRATED thats why you are going to vote in frustration then logical basis.
@Antebellum: Is not it in support of IK and Shareefs? Talibs want these parties to be in power for their gain.
Is the TTP really serious ? Do they want to pow wow with the TALIBAN ?
@Kulwant Singh: I totally agree with you, i was just mocking the attitude of some parties. When innocent ppl die in terrorist activities, they use the lame excuse of drones, i agree that drones kill innocent ppl and it is part of a bigger problem but it is definitely not the only cause of so much violance
@Liaqat: "Until Molana will not be effected by explosions" That mean you wish to see DAKRAAY ( Pieces ) of Molana?
Within one day after the fatwa against their dear Imran Khan, the TTP hit hard and fast. This proves beyond a doubt that the only loved ones of TTP and terrorists are IK and Sharif. They have been given exemption from all attacks and are free to roam around. Any and all those who are in the way of these two rightwing leaders be eliminated by TTP.
First and foremost, we send our heartfelt condolences to the friends and families of those killed in this act of terror. We hope to see the injured make a quick and speedy recovery.
The terrorists continue to cause disorder and mayhem right before the elections. They’ve already said that they wish to end democracy in Pakistan. We encourage the nation of Pakistan to stand tall against these ruthless barbaric terrorists who are preying upon innocent lives to achieve their deadly objectives. They are trying to intimidate the citizens and prevent them from exercising their right to vote. It is clear that they wish to dictate the outcome of these elections. We have full confidence in Pakistan’s ability to counter the threat posed by these militant organizations. We reiterate what Patrick Ventrell, Department of State Acting Deputy Spokesperson, said recently: “We condemn the violence surrounding the elections. We do continue to urge Pakistanis to get out and vote and express their free will so that democracy can prevail and the people’s voice can be heard. And so we’re concerned about the violence but we urge the electoral process to continue.”
Ali Khan
Really sad for the loss of life; that said there is something really odd about what is being reported. Who was responsible to do a bomb sweep before the event? looks like an inside job to me, could even be an attempt to get sympathy, I put nothing past someone who sells religion for his own benefit.
14 people? It must be Sarabjit singh.
I condemn the killings of common man. However I have no sympathy for political parties who ruled the country in the last 5 years. They should have resolved the problem. PPP, MQM, ANP, JUIF, PMLN, are all equally responsible. Let me repeat, I won't make a difference to my life if anybody kill their leaders. The leaders of these parties deserve nothing less than what is happening to them right now. They are still hiding and their workers are gettting killed.
By associating himself with TTP omran khan has shown lack of vision and judgement TTP is befriending nawaz and imran only bexuse they think these chracters will be easy to eliminate.MR FAZAL will be the first to be hanged if taliban assume power and so will be the fate of jamat islami
What Allah is doing - I have a doubt.
COndolences to those that are bereaved. @Ch. Allah Daad: True. But your leader also wants to befriend them. Just yesterdayhe gave a speech tat he would try peace with TTP.
Those who are being killed and those who kill are Muslims they are not human beings. The great Allah never supports those who kill his creatures.
@Waqas: Those who are killed by drones or extermists are poor people they have nothing to do with the Drones or extermists.
JUI leaders should think twice before they issue fatwa against the prodigy son of rightwing. Only after a day of fatwa they got the reply. I have no love for JUI but cannot gloat on the brutal bombings and killings by the terrorists. There are only two parties which are beneficiary of Taliban terrorists and their hijacking of elections.
It was Allah's will. Divine punishment, Fazlur Rehman?
Snake is no one's friend. You are a Taliban or their enemy. There is no middle ground.
Until Molana will not be effected by explosions, he will not call terrorists as terrorists.
May Allah Pak Damn in Terrorist Ameen.
Politicians meeting their fate now !
Not a big deal Maulana sahb, this is due to drone attacks as ever so move on
Chicken coming home to roost!
Earlier on Thursday, Maulana Fazlur Rehman appealed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) not to carry out attacks on candidates from political parties including the Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
..but feel free to target PTI?
Inna lilla hey wa ina elaihay rajayoon. Dua Fateha please for the dear departed. Ameen.
It is extremely unfortunate and loss of lives is extremely condemned. However, time to open your eyes Maulana sahab, seems like chickens have come home to roost.
Those who didnt care for their people are forced to think about terrorism!
Its as simple as ABC..Tit for Tat..unfortunately !!
Extremists have abundantly made it clear that democracy is not acceptable ( Un Islamic) to them
Why don't Pakistani people realize that terrorists are Nobody's friends.
Relegion + Politics + Fatwa = Boom. FR please learn from this.
another cheap attempt for sympathy vote.. so many innocent lives lost...
bad news. So JUI-F will also try to get some sympathy vote... they knew they cannot face PTI psunami..
It would be real fun if Mr Fazalu blame this bombing on "Left" leaning parties...and some organisation called "Liberal Loving Association Pakistan" (LLAP) accepts responsibility, thus Mr Fazlu would blame Left and Liberal...thus hitting two pigeons with one RPG.
"Maulana Fazlur Rehman appealed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) not to carry out attacks on candidates from political parties including the Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)."
Is that supposed to be a joke...Do not carry out attacks full stop is what he should have said.
Those parties who think that terrorists will not cause them any damage are living in fools paradise. Terrorism must be fought unanimously and with complete force. There must not be any tolerance, else we may lose Pakistan.
Yesterday Mulana issue a fatwa against IK, and now see the result.
Not our war right Mr. Fazlur Rehman?.
Inna lilllah.. I just hope that US is not blamed for this and JUI actually sees the death sword hanging above. Silly me.
