Two prisoners were taken into custody immediately after the attack and have now been charged with his murder, police official Tariq Mehmood told AFP.
"We have added a murder clause to the police complaint," Tariq Mehmood, a police official at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat police station, told AFP.
The motive was unclear, but Pakistani police say an initial investigation pointed to an exchange of "hot words" with Singh.
The Indian man on death row died Thursday after being attacked by fellow inmates, drawing criticism from India's premier who called for justice in the "barbaric" case.
Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced 16 years ago over deadly bombings, died in the early hours of Thursday from injuries suffered in last week's attack, a senior doctor at Jinnah hospital in the eastern city of Lahore told AFP.
Singh's body was taken to India in a Special Air India aircraft that landed in Amritsar, Press Trust of India reported.
"The criminals responsible for the barbaric and murderous attack on Sarabjit Singh must be brought to justice," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on his official Twitter page.
India has complained that its diplomats were denied access to the prisoner as he fought for his life, and the premier said it was "particularly regrettable" that Pakistan had not responded to appeals "to take a humanitarian view of this case".
The prime minister added that New Delhi would make the necessary arrangements to bring his body home for funeral rites, after earlier negotiations to treat the jailed spy in India or a third country failed.
Pakistan insists regular consular access was granted to Singh and said doctors did everything possible to save him before his death from cardiac arrest.
"The prisoner, who had been in a comatose state and on a ventilator for the last few days, was being provided the best treatment available and the medical staff at Jinnah Hospital had been working round the clock... to save his life," the foreign ministry said.
The government provided "all assistance" to Singh's family and the Indian authorities, and will facilitate "the early completion of all formalities" and hand over his body "at the earliest possible" time, it added in a statement.
Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Najam Sethi also ordered a judicial inquiry into the murder.
Singh's lawyer Owais Sheikh confirmed the 49-year-old's death and said his body had been moved to the hospital mortuary. The doctor at Jinnah hospital said arrangements were under way for an autopsy.
Singh went into a coma after suffering multiple serious injuries when six prisoners attacked him on April 26 at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail, hitting him on the head with bricks and fracturing his skull.
"His condition was more than critical and he had (little) chance of survival," Sheikh told AFP.
The lawyer has said his client received threats following the execution of a Kashmiri separatist in India. Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged in New Delhi on February 9 for his part in an Islamist attack on India's parliament in 2001.
Singh was convicted for his alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Pakistan's Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former president Pervez Musharraf.
His family insisted he was merely a farmer who became a victim of mistaken identity after inadvertently straying across the border while drunk.
India's foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin called for Pakistan to conduct an investigation into the prison attack.
"This was, put simply, the killing of our citizen while in the custody of Pakistan jail authorities," he told India's ANI news agency.
"The shocking attack highlights the need for concerted action by Pakistan to safeguard Indians in Pakistan prisons."
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan also condemned the attack as a "dastardly act" and called on the government to conduct a thorough inquiry and punish those responsible.
"The authorities have obviously failed to do their elementary duty" of keeping him safe, the commission said in a statement.
Four members of Singh's family – his wife, two daughters and his sister – who travelled to Lahore on Tuesday have since returned to India, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
A senior official in Delhi said earlier this week that diplomats from India's High Commission in Islamabad were not allowed to visit Singh in hospital, and had also complained about a lack of information on his condition.
The Pakistani foreign ministry, however, insisted Indian diplomats in Lahore were given access to Singh on two occasions.

I just feel sad and disgusted and how my fellow Pakistanis are rejoicing the death of sarabjit singh just coz he was an Indian , this shows how the government has brainwashed and screwed up your brains. and this shows Pakistan and its people living in Pakistan will always stay ignorant no matter what . Its a shame that you find joy in a brutal murder of a person who was already on death penalty , no one deserves to die this way . even kasab for given a fair trial and then hanged to death this is just sick and pathetic , and I don't even think Pakistan should even be called Islamic republic of Pakistan , it doesn't even deserves to be an Islamic state , since its not doing anything Islamic . shame on Pakistani government and the people who think sarabjit deserved to die brutally. shame on u all .
@Virkaul - "You guys are so primitive and with low IQ."
What can you expect from a nation who follows tribal Bedouins as their role models?
@ Every Pakistan & Indian.
@Asdu: Kasab was hanged, not killed by inmates. You guys are so primitive and with low IQ.
@Sad "Justice finally prevails, what the government should have done years ago was done by fate today. You might escape the Justice of Men but will never escape the Justice of Nature."
Well said dear ! And justice was delivered in a true Pakistani style. Great ! ! ! ! !
@HAS: Afzal guru carried an indin passport, why sud he be sent to your country of barbarians. Sarabjit singh was a scapegoat for your military rulers. 99 percent u dont belive intour own laws or military agencies, why should india believe then. Pakistan deserve to rot!! Do t believe me, just look around!
@Voice of Pakistan: "However, Indian PM used objectional words for Sarbijheet “Brave Son of India”. It means should we start giving titles to terrorists, who kill innocent people. "
Not hypothetical at all. Your parliament actually passed a resolution in favor of Afzal Guru. Secondly with Manjit SIng - please read comment by @Chanakyathecynic to get the facts.
@naeem hussain: "Barbaric act because he was not Musli? he was a terrorist he got what he deserved.@Indian Wisdom:
"
Barbaric act because even death row prisoners have some rights. They should not be bludgeoned to death by fellow prisoners at instructions of police. That never happened either to Afzal Guru or Kasab.
ET Mods: Can you never allow factual rebuttals of lies while allowing hateful lies? Please change your moderation guidelines if you only filter people due to their nicks without reference to content.
@HAS: "You killed afzal guru and refused to hand over his body. Why the double standards? "
No double standards:
Afzal Guru was tried in a court of law and had due process of appeal. Sarabjit Singh was tried in a militaary tribunal without lawyer and had no appeal process.
Afzal was hanged as per the sentence. Sarabjeet was bludgeoned to death on instruction of police - something that should not happen even to a death row prisoner.
Afzal Guru was Indian citizen and tried in Indian courts so there is no international aspect in that trial. Sarabjit was Indian citizen who was unfairly tried by Pakistan so there is clearly an international aspect to the trial.
Afzal Guru was not a case of mistaken identity, Sarabjit Singh was. Even Afzal Guru or his family never claimed he was not Afzal Guru. But the man who was sentenced by military tribunal was Manjit SIngh while Sarabjit and his family continued to claim that he was not Manjit Singh.
@Indian: "wasn’t he a terrorist ? … of course it’s not acceptable the way he was killed. but if the courts have found him guilty, the Indians should stop portraying him as a hero. "
!. No-one is portraying Sarabjit as a hero. Indians are simpy saying t that even death row prisoners have certain rights. Bludgeoning them to death on police orders is not correct. Perhaps you are confusing us with Pakistanis who consider Afzal Guru a hero.
In this case the person against whom the FIR was lodged was Manjit Singh. This man is Sarabjit Singh. For the longesttime Pakistan government claimed he is lying about his name and he is truly Manjit. But lately they too have been calling him Sarabjit - right there the case against him collapses.
This man never got due process in a court of law. He was tried in a military tribunal without access to lawyers. The 2 witnesses who testified against him have come out and said that they were pressurised to give false testimony.
In fact, the action of jail inmates is highly condemnable. They also need to dealt with proper murder law.
However, Indian PM used objectional words for Sarbijheet "Brave Son of India". It means should we start giving titles to terrorists, who kill innocent people. Sarbijheet is same as Ajmal Kasab, so both needs to be viewed with same eye.
Earlier, Pakistan released Surjheet singh on humanitarian grounds, and he admitted that he was sent by India. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NorthIndia/Back-from-Pak-Surjeet-admits-he-went-to-spy/Article1-880044.aspx
It is best interest if India and Pakistan to deal with terrorism as a joint effort, so region can flourish towards economic growth and peaceful co-existence.
To those who say Sarabjit was a terrorist, from wikipedia - "On 26 April 2008, the key witness Shaukat Salim [17][18] retracted his statement during an interview with newspersons. In court Salim had provided testimony that Sarabjit was the one who had planted the bomb but later on accepted that he had done so under pressure from the Pakistani police.[10] Pakistani human rights activist Ansar Burney claimed that none of the four FIRs lodged with regard to the bombings contained Sarabjit’s name nor his description and that Sarabjit had been arrested on the night of 30 August 1990 from the Kasur border for illegally crossing the Indo-Pakistani border. But after eight days the police implicated him in the terrorist bombings. He had not been arrested red-handed.[10] Burney also pointed out that the same magistrate had recorded the statements of the witnesses in all the four terror blast cases, out of which one had taken place at Faisalabad and the remaining three at Lahore, although the police cases had been lodged in four different police stations and two different districts.
@UMAIR: "Justics has been served actually."
Yup, we are in awe of it. An inspiration for all islamic states if not for the civilized...
What can you expect from a barbaric state? In a state of lawless, these things continue to happen. No wonder why the Gods continue to punish the state with violence, floods, drones, earthquakes etc. It's probably the most dangerous place to live in the world.
He was a convicted terrorist who was destine to death anyway. Leave him alone. At least we sent his dead body to India. And my sympathies are with widowers of Singh.
sarabajit was arrested and was in jail.our govt could not paid his responsibilities.and 3 or 5 prisoner attack on a high profile prisoner sarabajit.its not the duty of any private person that he announce the saza for any criminal.as Muslim the action of 5 prisoners was very wrong.and the govt show his very bad negligence.we should show good attitude in every condition.very sad way was choose to death of sarabajit....
For all those who say that Sarabit being murdered is okay because he wa already on death row - here are 2 things to consider
a) Your own constitution says that if someone has been awarded a death sentence but it is not carried out for over 14 years, they should be let free
b) Even those government that havedeath sentences on their statutes are required to carry out such sentences in a manner prescribed by their penal code. Bludgeoning a deathrow prisoner under plic orders is not considered normal anywhere in the world.
How many Benazir Buttos,Sarabjit Singhs,Zulfikar ali Buttos,Akbar Bagutis will Pakistan kill?Stop these non-sense immediately.
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: Great, next you should go after Raymond Davis... I will just hold my breath and wait :)
Another innocent killed in Pakistan.Number of innocents killed in Pakistan increases by 1 after the death of Sarabjit Singh. The master minds(Handlers) who killed Sarabjit singh are roaming around Pakistan freely and they have to be caught and punished immediately to at least get back the credibility of the Pakistan courts and law.
as an indian i will say thats its pakistans failure ...... he should be sentenced as per the judiciary........... this type of incidents will increase the hostility b/w two countries.....
Kasab was a pakistani .....he was kept in a special cell considering the threat ... so public reaction frm india is natural ....
I am truly sorry for Sarabjit's death. More so for what his family has gone through. I wouldnt wish that on any human being. My heart goes out to them.
But as far as Indian complaints are concerned, they dont have a leg to stand on. To name but a single case, Sepoy Maqbool Hussain was kept as a POW of 1965 for 40 years without informing the Red Cross or Pakistan, something that India was legally obligated to do. There are countless similar cases. Pakistanis prisoners return from India tortured into insanity; here Sarabjit is the tragic exception, not the rule.
The prisoners - on both sides - are generally poor or middle class, and helpless. To play power politics with them is evil of the highest degree. No matter who does it.
@all indians:
Everyone from India and many Liberal Fascist are crying there hearts out over the death of Sarabjeet Singh. People failed to recall and Indians while sparing no stone unturned to malign Pakistan, forget the death of Qateel Siddiqui. A muslim man, who was just 27 years old was picked up by Indian authorities alleging him of involvement in blasts. He was later killed in June 2012, by 2 fellow inmates in high security Pune jail.
The point to be noted is that as compared to Sarabjeet he was never convicted and was just under investigation.
Indians should look into their dirty issues before pointing their fingers towards Pakistan.

What has been done to Indian innocent citizen(Sarabjit Singh) who was under trial will also be done to other Pakistani citizens like what happen during Zulfikar Ali Butto by Zia ul Haq.Hence I request all people of Pakistanis to support the Indians plea against injustice.
@UMAIR: Does it mean u blv, in pakistan justice hv done like this. Why u hv nt hanged him.. Killing a person like this.. If justice then anyone can guess... to wht u will call killing or brutality
he shouldnt have died like this but as he was convicted and his repeated appeals for mercy to Various Presidents of Pakistan being turned down, he must have been hanged a long time ago. the justice was delayed and thats how it happens when justice is delayed.
I can charge ET Moderators of being jingoistic and partial in selecting what to include on this website. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ I also denounce the same!.
@Shah RuKh Khan:"f a terrorist like Sarbajit can be Hero of Indians, we must also stop condemning our self." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ So u hv been condemning urselves? most interesting.
Barbaric act because he was not Musli? he was a terrorist he got what he deserved.@Indian Wisdom:
Good fences create Good neighbours. wish if there was a great wall or mountain between India n pakistan. so that nobody comes here , nobody goes there... just don't even look that direction!!
Law and Order has gone to "Hell" in Pakistan, isn't this a sign and signature of a failed state.
Sarabjit was a terrorist, and no mercy for terrorists. No need to cry india, you did same with Ajmal Qasab
This will not be forgotten.
simply shows how coward and pathetic pakistan is......really a big LOL
@Kuldeep: But, Hanged him!!!
@Shah RuKh Khan: Sir, did Sarabjit was sentenced by Pakistan supreme court?Answer is no.
Indians on this Forum should note that there is no point in blaming Pakistan for its behaviour. It is the FAULT of the Indian Government which does nothing. The steps the Indian Government could take is stop issuing "Indis Visit Visas" to Pakistanis, sto all Sporting contacts with Pakistan and finally downgrade Diplomatic Relations. . Once Pakistan realises that it is losing all "Millions of confidence Building Measures" from India then Pakistan will start issuing "Confidence Building Measures" to India, . Problem Solved! . Cheers
@HAS: I did not know that Afzal Guru was a Pakistani. India had always suspected Pakistan's hand in the attack. Thank you for your confirmation. If he was not, your comment is just lame and full of
With such thing happening in Pakistan how can we have "Open borders" and "People to People" contact.
wasn't he a terrorist ? ... of course it's not acceptable the way he was killed. but if the courts have found him guilty, the Indians should stop portraying him as a hero.
shame on pakistan for giving favor to enemy who killed 14 people in pakistan. shame shame shame...sarabjit single was a terrorist.
For the past 10 years all we heard was the guys who are blowing up themselves are actually agents of RAW. Now that you don't hear such stuff as its clear the perpetrators are Pakistanis.
This incident too is one such case.
1) Sarabjit was sentenced for being Manjit Singh. For long Pakistan argued thus and now the Pak Govt itself is calling him "Sarabjit". Clearly there was no case, there never was. Poor guy had to face such difficulties just because he crossed over to Pakistan.
2) Pakistani courts have let loose Terrorists, have sentenced Prime Ministers to death, have dismissed Govt. Its clear they don't follow the norms of most Judicial Systems all over the world and have in a way gone rogue. This man too was not a Terrorist, but made out to be one by these inefficient courts.
@Pankaj:
Great Mr Pankaj,
Only this attitude can mellow our hearts,(note dictating Pakistan- Despite all of internal problems, Pakistan will prefer to die in misery and isolation than to live and prosper under Indian hegemony) none of us is Saint. lets stop what we have been doing and move ahead.
@Cosmo: Oh look at these Indians, pretending very humanist and as civilized breed,, every body know these hypocrites Banya mentality (including west). Where was this humanity when innocent Pakistani Muslims were burnt alive on Indian soil?? who many of those terrorist have you punished yet. where was this sympathy towards prisoners when you hanged Afzal Guru after keeping him behind the bars for decade ??
Pakistan despite all of its problems is much better a place than India where millions of people sleep without eating a bread, But, I being a Muslim can not congratulate you on your grievances as you are doing.
If a terrorist like Sarbajit can be Hero of Indians, we must also stop condemning our self.
To those pakistanis who derive satisfaction that justice has been served, terrorist dead, Allah's punishment never misses etc etc, The same logic of meting out punishment to Pakistan has been going on for more than 10 years with more than 30000 dead by drones, TTP, floods, earthquake, power cuts etc etc . Havent you had enough with these kind of barbarian theories.
Hi All, why can't we forget all this and start a peace between 2 countries. we kill your people, you kill our people where does it end. Please lets all hatred go and help each other to grow.
Gora's are taking advantage of our fights and happy.
Regards Pankaj
Whatever and whoever he was, Sarabjit Singh was a 'guest' in Pak and looks like the Pak people dont know how to treat their 'guests' .
Whatever this guy did, the way he was killed in our jail is just pathetic. The killers should be hanged immediately after all necessary procedures.
Comeuppance time. Families affected by his terrorism will finally have closure.
@Zulfiqar: Reading comments from pakiatanis, i have no doubt each one of u in there are barbarians !! Y dont deserv democracy or peace!! Cingratulation on all your faliures.
@Shah RuKh Khan: " Mind you Indian, your insurance in Af-Pak is going to expire this year. (your shelter) NATO is warping their stuff to depart, its our time, now, to reply India in the same coin for all they have done in Pakistan after 9/11. All Indian, accusing state of Pakistan for this killing shall also take this as a strategic shift and be prepare for more."
American funding to Pakistan will stop immediately and you guys will have problems. Pakistan is already bankrupt both morally and financially. Indeed it scares us to have you as a neighbor
Sarabjit was charged with Terrorism in a military court where all the evidences were fixed. He was never given a judicial trial. Authorities have claimed it to be a case of mistaken identity. Lately, in a pre-determined heinous attack, he was attacked brutally resulting in his demise. In a false retaliation against Kasab, Pakistan plotted all this. That explains the sub-standards of Pakistani authorities towards Judiciary, human rights.
All you indians out there, if we're so unfair and bad, then you arent any better. You killed afzal guru and refused to hand over his body. Why the double standards?
be it kasaab or sarabjeet, the terrorists should be hanged !!!!! its just that pakistan had been too linient but sarabjeet deserved the same fate as kasaab but not at the hands of jail inmates
@Ram: I think actions speak louder than words Ram, lip service is all too easy. Should the Pakistani's accept your comments as being facts or Fictitious words, which I desribed earlier as being too easy.
@raghu challa: You expect to reach a peace agreement by these means?, thank god your not the one running the country, it's nutters like you that cause wars to start.
@UMAIR: Justice would have been served if the verdict of your court had been implemented .This was barbaric . Do not rejoice at the murder of a human being .
actual justice acted upon singh..... THANX GOD
actual justice acted upon srbjheet singh........thanx GOD
Well then, good news then for those who think he deserved it..maybe they will realise the pains of the 200+ families from 9/11 Mumbai attacks and other innumerable attacks. but for those like me who think he may have been a 'mistaken identity' , having served his punishment for 22 years i see it as terrible news for a wasted life. But anyway I'v learnt one thing - 'The concept of a society is based on the quality of mercy, fair play and justice' ..he got none.
Even more disturbing is the fact that good number of pakistanis believe this extra judicial killing is justified. Jago.
We are all happy upon this terrorists death
@UMAIR: 100% agree with you brother. i think another terrorist die no matter what cause
@B: Article 6 is not for the terrorists, mind you. I agree with all Indians that such treatment is contrary to human and international values. Had our govts been competent enough they should have hanged him decade earlier if charges against him were true. Also Indians need to check their own track records where a recently returned prisoner(a soldier)'s tongue was cut off. Many that lost their mind in Indian prisons. It's a mutual problem not only on Pakistan side.
Okay, chapter is closed for the moment. I appreciate the Government of Pakistan’s decision for not hanging the terrorist (unlike Indian Government’s stupid decision of hanging Freedom Fighter Afzal Guru) otherwise he may have been regarded as hero. However the way he is killed is objectionable, our religion instructs us as how to kill a snake even. I feel sorry for the daughters and family member of the Sarabjit.
The way he died is sad!! And the culprits should be brought to justice. but i have no sympathies for him
Where was all this humanity when India was sending Sarbajit to kill innocent Pakistani, All Indian, accusing state of Pakistan for this killing shall also take this as a strategic shift. Its now high time to shift the gear. Mind you Indian, your insurance in Af-Pak is going to expire this year. (your shelter) NATO is warping their stuff to depart, its our time, now, to reply India in the same coin for all they have done in Pakistan after 9/11. All Indian, accusing state of Pakistan for this killing shall also take this as a strategic shift and be prepare for more.
@ashar: "Having him hanged would have brought shame to India " ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Like having Kasab hanged brought shame to Pakistan ?
@Kuldeep: and they hanged him, I guess, you would have felt really bad to write this too ?
ON a lighter note, later seems idiotic as they spent huge amount on prisoner-in-row.
India should stop providing medical visas to Pakstanis immediately since Pakistan has such a good medical system which was sufficient to take care of Sarabjit Singh when he was critically injured
@UMAIR: Dear in pakistan only TTP does justise. We will see
This type of incidents takes place when the justice is delayed, a guy who killed more than dozen people either hanged or died like this, it doesn't matter....
He was on death row, and as such, he should have been totally isolated.......one wonders how can such attack take place. The prisoners awaiting capital punishment are not allowed contact with fellow prisoners.....Pakistan government needs to explain that and also why was his condition and treatment, if any, not communicated to his family when they visited him in the Lahore hospital?
Tale of two nation Pakistan: where they brutally killed a prisoner.
India: where they spent 26cr for a prisoner[kasab], gave him Z security and fed him Biryani.
If this was a conspiracy, India would have financed it. Having him hanged would have brought shame to India and now a fair deal has been bartered against a basket of trash.
the culprits should be awarded a medal of honor and set free
The state of Pakistan is fully responsible for killing of Sarabjit and conspiracy angle stands fully exposed. Whole of India is hurt and there is a need to take up this issue at the international level to declare Pakistan as a failed state.
He should have been executed long time ago, Simple as that. No one thinks of 14 people he killed in bomb attacks. A terrorist.
Justice finally prevails, what the government should have done years ago was done by fate today. You might escape the Justice of Men but will never escape the Justice of Nature.
Pakistanis should know and read The Constitution of Pakistan, Article 6 which states that if the sentence of the convict is not carried out within fourteen (14) years, that convict should be set free and cannot be charged again with the same charges.
With Sarabjit's death, Pak has painted itself a heartless villain, even in the most forgiving Indians eye. Unforgettable insensitivity....Anyone who justifies the callousness of Pak authority handling of Sarabjit by highlighting some case in the past, needs a lesson in humanity...
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Sarabjjit-Singh-dies-in-Lahore/liveblog/19829053.cms
Two of Pakistani prisoners who attacked Sarabjit have confessed that they did so at the instructions of Police. How come bricks and iron rods can enter prison unless someone has done it deliberately? Because he was a condemned prisoner according to Pakistani laws, it doesn't mean no protection was given to him, especially after threats to his life due to Afzal guru's hanging in India. Incidentally police in maharashtra have extended more protection to Pakistani prisoners in Mumbai. That is the kind of care we in India extend to prisoners. Its a shameful act on the part of Pakistan who beheads Indian soldiers, allows Indian prisoner to be attacked to death
Lost for words..... very sad...... A barbaric act in the deep state!! Simply disgusting..........
The loved ones of the deceased families who were killed by the bomb blasts by Sarabjit Singh were cursing him day and night.
Though the Jail Authorities did not hanged Sarbajit Singh, as his Red Warrant was not issued, despite the fact the the concerned court awarded him death penalty 16 years ago.
Finally, the justice has been served to the deceased families of Sarabjit Singh's bomb blasts by Al-Mighty Allah and the prisoners who attacked Sarabjit Singh became source of the justice.
In the case of Sabajit Singh, justice delayed were justice denied to the victims of the bomb blasts, by finally Al-Mighty Allah delivered the justice and the prisoners became the reason in delivering the justice.
The Indian terrorist deserved to be hanged but this not like this.
Pakistan is a rogue nation and this is not just our view. they are asking for war. if not war, break all relations with them. cancel all business with them. send back all the pakistanis and cancel all visas. exchange prisoners on one to one basis. be clear and treat them as an enemy that we should be wary of.
Dear India,
Justics has been served actually.
The state should have executed him years ago. His death after being attached by inmates brings shame to the country.
