The results of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) much touted intra-party elections are out, and they have managed to take even the party chairman by surprise. Despite tough resistance by those who boarded the PTI bandwagon after the Lahore rally, old stalwarts have prevailed. Generally known as the true face of PTI, these old stalwarts are now poised to topple new inductees in the party from senior positions in PTI, including president, vice chairman and senior vice presidents.
“It’s a wake-up call for the new workers, the results of the PTI intra-party elections have arisen the old ideological workers in the party,” said a senior party leader, who did not want to be named. Results show that if the democratic process continues, and elections are held for senior positions in the party, then Imran Khan is likely to see the return of many old faces in the Central Executive Committee, he predicted.
Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Senior PTI Campaigner Asad Omer and Senior Vice President Jahangir Tareen are likely to face increasingly tough resistance due to their unqualified promotion of new inductees during the intra-party elections, added another senior leader.
While talking to The Express Tribune, the party leader said that the re-election of Asad Qaiser as President of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa wing had sent a message for those who had left the party due to intra-party conflict (induction of Musharraf era politicians).
Qaiser had been unceremoniously removed by Imran Khan last year when Iftikhar Gilani and Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti had joined the PTI in the province. Both have now left the party. Qureshi, Tareen and Omar had been openly supporting Pervez Khattak for this slot, he added.
Similarly, party leaders quoted the example of Amir Mughal, elected as President of Islamabad, saying that he won the post despite not being in the good books of Imran khan.
They further said that only President Javed Hashmi, whose ill health does not allow him to mobilize PTI workers in elections, encouraged Mughal to continue his struggle. Senior party leaders, in an interaction with The Express Tribune, said that the elections will prove a hard nut to crack for the new inductees, who will have difficulties in holding on to high offices. He said the lack of popularity of new inductees amongst ideological workers worked against them.
Amir Mughal said that party workers were ideological, which is why “only leaders popular with the workers would continue to hold high positions.”
Talking about the results, senior PTI leader Jahangir Tareen said; “This is only the beginning of Tabdeeli (change) - the intra-party elections will prove to be a game changer by showing the contrast between “family” parties and a worker party like PTI.”
Secretary Information Shafqat Mehmood said that PTI had set a historical precedent. “PTI is the only party in the subcontinent which had held real, fair and transparent elections for all party positions.” Sources revealed that a majority of PTI workers were ready to vote for Nadir Leghari for Sindh President, while an old party stalwart Qasim Suri was likely to win the elections for Balochistan President.
Meanwhile, ideological party leaders such as Ijaz Chaudhry, Mian Mehmood Rashid, and Dr Yasmin are already giving a tough time to the Tareen-Qureshi supported duo of Aleem Khan and Ahsan Rashid in Punjab.

can pti bring change in pak?
I think Imran Khan is right he will sweep election, because I was doing some research on previous elections of Pakistan and I have found something very interesting. Voters turn out in most of constituencies were about 30-43 %. If Imran Khan "PTI" is able to make a wave of change before elections, I think for sure PTI have great chances of Clean sweep, and every one can get a big shock.
truly a Democratic milestone. sadly we as largest democracy in the world are not used to it.
If PTI will eventually become like a PPP or PML-N then why do we need a third force? IK and PTI are then wasting their time and more importantly time of the people of Pakistan. I am honestly angry that they are becoming like another PML-N. We already have a PML-N and they have even more money and connections than PTI can ever have. So what is the point then? New bottle old wine!
I think this article is not completely telling the truth. New guys are still very powerful. They have a lot of money and they can buy people out. PTI will eventually become like another PPP or PML-N. See what happened in Lahore, a land mafia gangster got elected. See this report on him. He has murder FIR registered against him. Is IK bringing such people ? Are these clean people? http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story16-12-2004pg7_21
Long Live Pakistan, Long Live PTI and IK, true democracy, We love you IK
Calling Imran bashers to comment !!! Anyone, Anybody out there? Hello.....!!!
mashallah IK thinking of next generation/pakista --true leader like jinna
Indeed it is a great achievement. Congratulations Imran and his supporters. Other parties take no shame, yet they have held bogus elections in a day and that too people are elected unopposed. what a joke..However, I hope IK will deliver with honesty and positivity.
@The Khan: It is not fair to compere Imran Khan with PML-N leaders who were at the helm of the affairs since 1990s. They did not deliver anything to the people. Just see what is going on here. Even Musharraf era was better than PML-N government. For four and a half years they gave full support to PPP and now just before the elections, they are coming out as if they have not done any wrong.
I am a 66 year old citizen of Pakistan. I am very happy to see a party holding true and fair election within the party for the first time in the history of Pakistan. My prayers are with Imran Khan. I want to see him to head the next government. I hope he will deliver what he dreams. His past is full of struggle for various causes.
What a leader Imran Khan is. Takes the pressure and delivers when others just talk. I can see his campaign kicking off on 23rd March big time.
Democracy begins at home. Well done PTI
A small point re last paragraph. Ahsan rasheed is one of the founding members of pti 16 years ago....if you are going to put people in groups.....they dont come mor ideological than him!
Wel done!!
bravo..................despite media's mindless hue and cry, PTI has done it, a very very proud member today!
@Zain: Then IK is proved wrong here as well is his assessment of the sitauation like on many occasions.
@S. S. Ahmad:
The biggest indicator of a right thing to do is that it is difficult to do. If you don't like PTI elections, you can always enjoy the darbari league's selection!
This is an achievement in the real sense..First time in years i have realized they just might deliver. Well done PTI.
PTI intra-party elections were fake! I bet it's true!
Well done PTI !!!! This is beginning of a new era in Pakistan and I am positive that inshAllah PTI will win good majority in elections. Long live Pakistan...
@S. S. Ahmad: While there is some merit to your concern, you have to look at things from long-term perspective. It is now that PTI has graduated from a new political kid around the block to a full blown political institution that will shape fate of the country for decades to come.
good news for sincere pakistani, must be appreciated !
Good Going... Waiting for 23rd March Grand Jalsa with all the genuine Office Bearers of PTI.
Despite being a strong critic of PTI on various issue............I really salute them for inducting demcratic norms in their party.........it was really a tough call to make but a right one and its really good that IK has taken stand on this issue. lets hope that other parties learn some lessons from PTI on this matter.
PTI thinks that these party elections are a big achievement. In fact these elections are going to split the party in two. The resentment of losers will keep them from cooperating with he winners. This was the worst time for this exercise and PTI will pay for this mistake in the elections.
@Voice Of D.I.Khan:
Well, IK cannot contest from all 272 constituencies. I think PTI team in D.I Khan should work more on ground rather than expecting IK to do everything. If candidate is weak, he should not be supported in intra-elections. Plus, the most important point of these intra-elections is to get out of candidate politics and enter into party politics.. So, we must strive to vote PTI and not the candidates. This should be our compaign.
Stay Blessed ...
"Sources revealed that a majority of PTI workers were ready to vote for Nadir Leghari for Sindh President . . ." . Actually, a lot of educated PTI workers in Sindh have left since Nadir Leghari was airlifted into the party. People on the ground know the unsavoury truth about him. . Lets hope the system works and someone worthy from the old guard gets elected.
PTI put a challenge to other political parties whose workers will also demand elections in the party at union council level which will pave the way for basic democracy in the country.
IK,, Please choose a competitive candidate in Dera Ismail Khan, because your candidates here are weak... IK himself against Molana will be a good choice... :)
Thumbs up PTI. this is just the beginning now a person from a middle class or poor back ground can think about contesting elections against big money.. change is just around the corner...!
This over here is what we call change! ladies and gentlemen!
if this continues..PTI will soon InshaAllah bring down political dynasties such as PPP and PML-N
PTI Rocks! Status Quo Shocks...............
To be fair..this is quite an achivevement. Wow.
A good move is that there are so many New Names, I never heared before, i wish if they come in to power, they would prove theirselves and set example for the generations. (This will be the Real Change in itself)
When filing candidates for general elections they will appoint those who joined the party recently under directions from chairman khan
Even though I am a long time PML N supporter but i am very impressed by this. Pakistan is in safe hands with PTI and PML N running the show
All credit goes to IK for going along with elections in such difficult times... A true leader!
Democrarcy at its best.
NO matter how good a leader is, he cannot have full knowledge about all local leaders. Some dodgy people have been elected too. But overall it is good. It has helped kick out guys like Masood Khattack and Hoti.
So called electcables can't even get elected in local elections.
PTI bounces back.
A true democratic party.
This is a truly democratic party. Long live PTI, Imran Khan zindabad
