LAHORE:

Civil Lines police arrested model Sofia Mirza on Tuesday for allegedly kidnapping an 18-year-old girl from her neighbourhood. The model was, however, released six hours later, after police said her involvement in the alleged kidnap could not be established.

An FIR was registered against Sofia Mirza and her sister Mariam Mirza under Section 365-B (kidnapping or forcing a woman into marriage) on the complaint of Rukhsana Zahid, the girl’s mother.

A police team arrested Sofia from her house in Cavalry Ground Extension and later released her.

Zahid Zahoor, the missing girl’s step father, told The Express Tribune that police had favoured Mirza by releasing her without producing her before a court to seek a remand. He said last year Sofia Mirza had filed a false FIR against his son. Investigation Officer Yousaf told The Tribune that Sofia Mirza was released as her involvement in the kidnapping could not be proved.

He said the girl had apparently left home following an argument with her step father over a marriage proposal.

SP (Investigation) Adeel Hussain said Sofia Mirza was not arrested. He said she had approached the police station herself to answer questions. She was let go, after her involvement in the case could not be established, he said.
