Former playboy Michael Clarke was enjoying married life Thursday after the Australian Test captain tied the knot with a model in a secret ceremony, saying he was “the happiest guy in the world”.
Clarke, known as “Pup” for his youthful precociousness, shocked the sporting world by announcing he married Australian Kyly Boldy on Tuesday in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney via Twitter.
“Happiest guy in the world. Married KylyBoldy yesterday in front of our gorgeous families. Couldn’t be happier!” Clarke tweeted late Wednesday to his nearly 250,000 followers on the site.
Boldy tweeted: “Luckiest Woman in the world! Married MClarke23 on the 15th of May 2012. Greatest day of my life, so proud to be your Wife.”
Clarke flew back to Australia for the ceremony from India where he is playing in the Indian Premier League for the Pune Warriors and said in a statement that he was ecstatic.
“We are extremely happy,” he said, and revealed he wore Louis Vuitton and his bride, who he began dating 18 months ago, an Alex Perry creation.
“Our day couldn’t have been more perfect.”
Reports in Australia said Shane Warne and his girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley were the only non-family members to attend the wedding at the luxury Wolgan Valley Resort.
“A million congratulations to you both – we were honoured to be included xx,” Hurley tweeted.
The low key marriage is a far cry from Clarke’s previous life before becoming Australian captain in 2011, when he never strayed far from the tabloid pages.
This was largely because of his high-profile relationship with blonde model Lara Bingle, the face of Australia’s unpopular “So where the bloody hell are you?” tourism campaign.
Their messy break-up, prompted by a nude photo scandal involving Bingle, culminated in Clarke controversially leaving a tour of New Zealand to end their engagement, as gleeful media camped outside their Bondi Beach penthouse.
