LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested two more contractors in the multi-million rupee Pakistan Railways (PR) scrap scandal.

The arrested contractors have been identified as Muhammad Rasheed and Akram Qadri.

During investigations, the accused claimed that they had been hired by another contractor, Abdul Razzaq, who had fraudulently established two fake firms which were awarded scrap contracts by the PR authorities.

The accused were presented before the accountability court by FIA’s Anti Corruption Circle (ACC) and taken into physical remand. Further investigations are in progress.

According to FIA officials, more than Rs60 million have already been recovered from different contractors involved in the scam. However, an amount of Rs20 million is still to be reclaimed.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) started a probe into the alleged disposal of 39,000 metric tonnes of scrap worth more than Rs300 million, in violation of the prescribed rules, on the directives of the Supreme Court in December.
