LAHORE:

Senator Zulfiqar Ali Khosa urged veterinarians to help address farmers’ problems. He was addressing the inaugural session of a one-day seminar, Roadmap for development of dairy sector of Pakistan, at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) conference hall.  Khosa said the chief minister attached great importance to the livestock sector.

“Various steps have been taken to improve the livestock sector.  Southern Punjab has a lot of animals but local farmers are not aware of modern dairy farming,” he said, adding that it was the need of the hour to launch concerted efforts to cure sick animals and enhance milk and meat potential in the province. Agriculture Minister Ahmad Ali Aulakh said, “Livestock accounted for 55.1 per cent of value-added agricultural products and 11.5 percent of GDP during 2010-11. Livestock sector’s role in rural economic development can be guaged from the fact that 35-40 million rural people are dependent on it.”
