While linking women empowerment to the prosperity of the country, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain added another milestone to the country’s political history by supposedly hosting the largest congregation of women in the world.
Addressing the large gathering of his female followers, Altaf Hussain galvanised the audience even further by claiming that this congregation alone was enough to counter the claims about big rallies by other political parties.
The sea of women waving the traditional red, green and white flags indeed seemed larger than the crowd that had thronged Bagh-e-Jinnah to listen to Pakistan Thereek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. MQM officials put the number of attendees at one million. The crowd contained women from all socio-economic backgrounds, most of whom came with their children. It seemed that the party’s male members heeded to their leader’s advice, after all.
The party’s numerical claims gained credibility after the BBC declared the rally to be the largest congregation of women ever organised in the world. Nasreen Jalil and other party members also claimed that it was the largest crowd ever assembled that sung a national anthem and that they intended to get it recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records.
One political analyst, while comparing the event with the recent PTI rally, said that it was like observing two different receptions, one hosted by a family in its own house and the other by a stranger at a new place. “It was their (MQM’s) home city, the party knew everything inside out and also had ample experience in organising large-scale events like this one,” he said. The party had made traffic arrangements, parking and security arrangements and provided 100 mobile toilets, food stalls, a media help desk, an information desk occupied by ra1bita committee members. A high proportion of female police officers were also present at the occasion. A male volunteer, Rasheed, said that the organisers planned the event to conclude early, keeping in view the fact that women from all over the city came to attend the event.
The mammoth stage provided room for the party’s women members from all over the country, who gave short speeches at the beginning. Some of these included Nadia Gabol, Nasreen Jalil, 1Khushbakht Shujaat, Bilquis Mukhtar, Laila Parveen and Kishwer Zehra. Altaf Hussain later addressed the public meeting via phone line from London. Although the event lacked musicians to liven up the crowd, Altaf Hussain more than made up for their by singing “Leke pehla pehla pyar, leke acha acha pyar jadoo nagri se aya hao koi jadogar.” However, towards the end, the attendees were treated to a 20-minute spell of spectacular fireworks, along with songs by Shazia Khushk.
Umaima Jaffer, a resident from Defence Phase V, said that she was drawn to the event by the worthy cause it was supposed to address. “Our political parties are forgetting that they need to come up with clear cut and well defined strategies for various issues in order to get votes, instead of just relying their usual fans voting in their favour” she said.
The speech
According to Hussain, the country could never prosper or strengthen unless the women were empowered. While talking about the condition of women in Pakistan, he said that women did not have basic human rights as they were buried alive or treated like animals. He added that the MQM had changed the perceptions and showed that women could participate in politics. “We held the first rally for women on July 15, 1988,” he said. “Another historic rally for women was organised by the MQM at Nishtar Park in June 2005.” He added women had played a important role in Operation Clean-up in 1992. “They opened Nine Zero and held the funeral of their loved ones, suffered hardships and went to jail but remained steadfast,” he said. “More than 15,000 MQM workers were killed and to date 28 workers are still missing.” He added that his party had campaigned for the rights of women in all the legislative bodies of the country. It introduced legislation in the Sindh Assembly against karo kari and domestic violence and got the Women Protection Bill passed in parliament.

Regardless of political tug of war among various parties,it was the first ever Women Rally, in the history of Pakistan, and no doubt, the credit goes to Altaf Bhai.Hats off to him
Greatest show of passion, discipline and excellent organisation I have ever witnessed in front of my eyes. This was first time I attended an MQM meeting with my other six friends and I can say we all were speechless to see the human sea of passionate MQM supporters. I am going to register myself in voting list to vote my local member Kush Bakht Shujaat in the coming election.
Asalamu Alaikum
MQM is power of politics & karachi people. inshallah MQM will defeated all terrorist party & small brain party
@karachite Nobody can take you out from denial I hope after losing elections you PTI fellas will cry like the way you are crying now. Wake up !
@Amar..
That was the best possible reply man! Thumbs up!
And u missed out one major point that in PTI's jalsa, everyone came by their own will, while most people are taken forcibly in MQM's jalsa from shops, slumps and other poor areas of KHI. So the 2 jalsa's arent comparable!
@Karachite: @Primus XIII:
PLEASE don't make assumptions without checking your self, it's prohibited in all religions specially in ISLAM , Open your eyes to accept the facts if we will not accept now another split (of Pakistan) is in the OFFING. We should give rights to every community.
Come on Pakistan and be united to safe the future of our neXt generation.
BRAVO MQM FOR ARRANGING SUCH A HUGE GATHERING (start thinking democratically even if you don't like). If we will not see the present scenario with open eyes and with open heart we will lose a lot.................................................
Hats off to Altaf Bhai and Mqm supporters not only for this rally all the hard continous work Mqm do let other be jellies of Mqm No one else can do it if u think because of Mqm vote bank in Karachi so show us the women's gathering this big in your own vote bank areas
Atleast someone took the initiative for the just and equal rights for women in Pakistan. Congrats MQM
Gr8 move by MQM and i would love to see MQM's position in this sense here my city Lahore. The only party where anyone can get into parliament like me and you who is educated capability to prove your self other any party still maintaining status co. I am sure the way PTI has finally chosen to run their party will become the part of status co. I wish people will vote to party no matter who is participating as this happen in Karachi. Only Nizamat was given to MQM and they restructured whole city. Amazing there members are still from middle class not involved in corruption. With so many wrongs i like the only hope but our Punjab has to change their thinking and approach. I did not see ever any crowd like this with lots of energy.. please think again again before making any rubbish comment.
Well I agree that it was a good show by MQM, no doubt about that, but one should acknowledge the fact that it was their homeground and unlike with the case the PTI had, which was playing at a neutral venue. So you can't compare MQM Jalsa with PTI. I would call it successful, if they had gathered the same massive crowd at Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore. PTI had done it on both locations that's why, they are till date a successful party. Also PTI is holding their Jalsa in Quetta, where they can show what their worth are, if MQM is a successful party, then Come On and Hold a Jalsa in Quetta, that will show your real worth.
Also one more worthy thing to note is the trend's set by the PTI, which is being followed by everyone, like Playing National Anthem in Jalsa's; Using Music and Singers in Jalsa's; Using Bagh-e-Jinnah as venue for Jalsa. So PTI is a trendsetter (In other means a "Leader") and everyone is following it (In other means a "follower"), including MQM. Everone remembers the first one and not the followers.
Now next one to gather here is ANP and after sometime it will be PPP. So these following Jalsa's doesn't have any major impact the PTI had.
@ Jal Gaya Burnol Lagayen , kudos dude .Aptly said .
""Some people make headlines while others make history." Said.....Philip Elmer-DeWitt.....
But yesterday, on the 19th the world witnessed the both...headlines and the history.....created by da awakened women of karachi.....the world's largest ever women gathering at Bagh-e-Jinnah.....under the banner of Muttahedah Qaumi Movement...... Hats off to them and many many congratulations for creating this historical event.
Long live Quaid-e-Tehreek Altaf Hussain Bhai Long live MQM :-)
This report is full of lies. It was clearly a small crowd. I personally found there was nothing inspiring there.
His hollow claims apart----- what has he done for the emancipation of women in Pakistan except for holding rallies and kite flying by the young girls. I think our leaders have already fooled our people more than enough.
Congratulations to Quaide Tehrik Altaf Bhai and all party members. It was not only a massive rally showing the real power of MQM but also a reminder that MQM is the only party in the country that has ideology very different from all others including the entrants PTI.It is not the first time that MQM has organised women rally, similar events with participation of women and families had been organised on several occassions in 80s and 90s. Then in later part of 90s,the direct involvement of its supporters was slightly reduced due to ongoing operation against MQM as its supporters were afraid to expose their affiliation with the party.
But due to the great support that has established in more than 20 years, there was no need of its followers coming to every party rally, also the party does not expect its followers to attend every event. The rallys are required for two basic reasons, the one is to communicate with your people and other is to show the power you have with you.Due to grass root organisaton, the party has a very effective and efficient system to communicate with its supporters. This is the main reason of MQM success that is evident in the day to day political acievements and in times of election. However, if show of power and organisation is the need, still there is no other political party that can compete with MQM. Unfortunately, the people who talk and write against MQM fail to understand reality of its deep rooted support which is now transferred to second generation. The PTI supporters especially need to to learn history and accept the reality of others around them. The closed minds and explicit hate of PTI followers towards others will only harm the national integrity.
I would prefer an alliance of PPP- MQM and ANP any tim rather than Immy
MQM haters please buy some Burnol and apply it on your burn wounds where ever they are, You tried hard to stop MQM , to cut size MQM vote Bank, spent days and nights doing anti MQM propaganda but yesterday rally is enough to fail all your efforts and show that MQM still Rocks and have Mass ground support and Street power. Karachi is not a village where women can be brought forcefully under the mass presence of Local and International Media so cut the crap and accept MQM vote Bank
Sepectacular Show of Power and certainly a claim of 1 million backed by BBC is an achievement.

MQM has delivered in past... they will deliver again... those who have serious interest in political dynamics of Pakistan always regard MQM efforts... Tehreek is getting good popularity and wonderful support across Pakistan. This has been a steady progress as MQM has been working in the field for last 25 years or more.
Lol! who are they fooling!! Everyone knows how MQM forceibly gathers crowd in their every jalsa!! No one living in Karachi is that much fool!
Welldone MQM. MQM marked a historical record, No one can beat this.
Congratulation and Hats off to MQM, they have done it again. BRAVO. long Live MQM
Samia.could you please paste the link to that BBC report you mentioned. I failed to find that anywhere on the net.
It was an excellent women gathering and much better than PTI'S public gathering........MQM is the only party of PAKISTAN who can deliver and strengthen the NATION.....Proud to a MQM supporter JIAY MQM PAKISTAN ZINDABAD
Great work & effort, keep it up....let the world know who we are ? G.A. Altaf,G.A. Muttahida
Another publicity stunt and comical and musical speech by megalomaniac Altaf Hussain. Women liberated or not but the media must be liberated from the shackles of MQM. Incredible the the governor of the province used government helicopter to witness the 'mammoth' women's crowd. Is their any accountability for thousands of litres of aviation fuel burnt by the chopper in which the governor was flying. THE CJP WOULD BE WELL ADVISED TO TAKE NOTICE OF BRAZEN VIOLATION OF RULES AND REGULATION BY THE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FEDERATION AND MISUSING HIS AUTHORITY.
@Primus XIII
lets assume for a second that you are saying truth but the question is that how can you inject the passion in people, did you really see the passion of crowd? Even BBC and VOA reported about the zeal and cheerfulness of the crowd.
It was good show by MQM. good work. keep it up!
I am writing this for those who are measuring number of attendees with the capacity of Venue, this really was not in Baghe-e-Jinnah, it was starting from Baghe-e-Jinna, becaseue the adjusent park in which Quaid's tomb is situated was also filled, who Shahrae Quaideen wast filled, the then entire area across Numaish was filled till Guru Mandar. If you know Karachi there are 3 roads which are joining to Guru Mandar, 1. Jamsheed Road, 2, Jahangir Road, and 3 Business Recorder Road all these road were filled till there next roundabouts. So actually this was not only the biggest women gathering but this was the biggest public gathering that Karachi ever witnessed after COP (Combined Opposition Parties) public meeting which was held in 1990.
Goodluck with MQM is, they always achieve numbers; but on the parallel side they are bad in justifying/ achieving/ and retaining the purpose of activity.
What BBC report? The world record is for a festival in India. 2 million.
Being a witness to the event, I can safely say that there were far more attendees than PTIs event. BBC has also claimed the attendance to stand as a world record....those who are still not acknowledging it are not fooling others but themselves because the world has seen both the events and can judge better. I congratulate MQM for holding such a mega event for women and appreciate their leaders for paying tribute to the Quaid-e-Azam before begining the event...no one but Muttehida showed respect for the founder of Pakistan. It all shows the values that a party has. Hats off to MQM for the wonderful show of discipline and popularity.
It was a good effort by MQM.
I saw with my very own eyes, female servants and sweepers being forcefully boarded up in buses to be taken to this so called gathering. The poor and unfortunate people of this city were scared of sending their women to work on Sunday, because of this sad reality. Even my mothers female attendant failed to show up because she was complaining of the same thing.
@pervaiz memon, don't know about the rally, but at other places (units), even azan was not respected and music was not stopped. May Allah forgive us.
This is the passion of MQM. The real trend setter in the history of Pakistan. Hats off MQM (Y)
well done and many congrats to my mothers and sisters of Pakistan
it was big show and it will help mqm to refresh it voting strength . I think mqm have maximum no. of die hard woman worker/supporter compare to all other parties . But musical concert after rally is unnecessary or not it will depend on common's people feed back ..
And the point of this rally was ... ?
Dear PTIers and Nawaz supporters out-of-Karachi ,why can't you simply digest the fact ? It is highly unlikely that myopic people would ever understand the grassroot support MQM yield . Stop the hatred filled and rather conjured up notions and wake up . The same had been done against Balochistan by us ..
@Khurram plz checkout #womenpk trend on twitter so that you could have an idea about how people were twitting around the globe about the rally! here in San Jose all we friends were watching it!
We should now expect Nasreen Jalil as the next Quaid-e-Tehreek :)
People in PTI's rally might be 100 but the pakistsanis all over the world, including me were up whole night for Imran Khan (whole world) whereas no one knows about this rally of one million out of karachi.
Lolz u ppl can never seems to digest the fact that ppl pouring in MQM rallies has always been at higher side tahn compared to any other rally by any other party. @Ahsan Malik: the venue was fully packed, besides thsi Mazar-e-Quaid was also half packed there were ppl standing ounstide the venue till 2-3 KM's. PTI had put a great show that day no disagreements but dnt take teh credit away from MQM of holding such a large rally and that to of only women.
Congrats MQM I had fun & I really enjoyed it . I went there with my 6 friends & we rocked
Atleast half million as reported by BBC
good jalsa !!! if mqm says it is a national party they should now bring out a massive crowd at minar e pakistan or some where in peshawar or balochistan. I appreciate mqm's rally for women emancipation but the fact of the matter is mqm has it's base only in karachi and in very few areas of sindh.... karachi is a huge city with a huge population even maulana fazlur rehman was able to gather a huge crowd.
The article doesn't pay tribute to Altaf's singing abilities. Lay Kay Pehla Pehla Pyar..
NO COMMENTS NEEDED BUT THE CONGRATULATION FOR ALL PAKISTANIES . WELL DONE MQM U DISERVE IT NO ONE ELSE.
One million? Oh please. The ground that hardly managed to contain a tightly packed 250k in PTI's event cannot manage one million women in spaced out seating (some of that was visibly empty - debatable), and that too with free McDonalds, free mehndi, free everything tents in the same ground.
Us Pakistanis love to exaggerate. Its a man thing.
"The sea of women waving the traditional red, green and white flags indeed seemed larger than the crowd that had thronged Bagh-e-Jinnah to listen to Pakistan Thereek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. MQM officials put the number of attendees at one million."
who are they fooling? we're not blind!
