FAISALABAD: Six people including five police personnel were injured during a clash between two groups in Muharram 10 processions in Jhang on Tuesday.
According to details, a mourning procession was proceeding as per pre-designated route from Imam Bargah Deabkarran, Jhang after offering Zuhrain prayers. Upon reaching Qazianwali Masjid, two rival groups started pelting stones on each other due to which the participants of the processions dispersed.
Police which had been posted for security, resorted to baton charge and teargas to bring the situation under control.
During this clash, six people including five police officials were injured. They were immediately shifted to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Jhang.
Upon receiving information, a heavy police contingent was dispatched to the spot which brought the entire locality under control.
Similar but smaller clashes were also reported from Qasr-e-Zahra, Abkara Chowk and Block Shah and other parts of the city.
One of the groups was led by a former provincial minister Sh. Hakim Ali, who heads a dissident faction of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (formerly known as Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan).
The situation was soon brought under control by the shrewd handling by the administration who tactfully and methodically separated the warring factions and facilitated the peaceful culmination of the Muharram procession to its designated destination and safe return of mourners to their houses.
Eight people were injured in Shia-Sunni clashes in Jhang on Monday. The leadership of a Sunni group warned police that it would not allow Shias to hold their main Ashura procession until those involved in a “sacrilegious incident” were taken into custody. The matter was placated after the DCO and DPO Jhang Rao Abdul Kaleem had managed to convince Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat to allow the Shia sect to take out their processions on Muharram 10.
