Police fired tear gas and used batons to ward off protesters who were chanting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, witnesses said.
Security forces moved in after hundreds of worshippers, mostly youths, streamed out of mosques and held noisy demonstrations in the towns of Anantnag and Sopore.
Protesters retreated into narrow lanes and pelted police and paramilitary forces with stones, sparking the violence.
At least four policemen and three protesters were injured, a police officer said, asking not to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media.
Authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary in the summer capital Srinagar to prevent a repeat of the violent protests that hit the city last year on the Muslim holiday of Eidul Fitr.
Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani had been placed under house arrest, his office said.
India has an estimated 500,000 troops in Kashmir, which is split into Indian- and Pakistani-administered parts.

@Ali Tanoli: Some points.. 1. Police around the world acts n similar manner when stones are thrown at them for no reason (in this case a rumour) 2. The Indian army operations are similar to what Pakistan army does in SWAT. 3. Before pointing fingures at others, remember three of them would be pointing at you.

Part 2 of Section 7 of the POK Constitution states: "No person or political party in Azad Jammu and Kashmir shall be permitted to propagate against, or take part in activities prejudicial or detrimental to, the ideology of the State’s accession to Pakistan".
Under Section 5(2) (vii) of the POK Legislative Assembly Election Ordinance 1970, a person would be disqualified for propagating any opinion or action in any manner prejudicial to the ideology of Pakistan, the ideology of POK's accession to Pakistan, or the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan. The same caveat applies to anyone who "defames or brings into ridicule the judiciary of AJK, of Pakistan, or the Armed Forces of Pakistan".

First read the POK constitution, it clearly states that people of POK have no choice but strictly to adhere with Pakistan, you first ask your Government to change that to allowing people of POK to choose their destiny, then start shedding crocodile tears for Indian Kashmir.
India will suffer, with new and old wounds as its is spending 13 billion to equip it army against their neighbors or to curb, upcoming povertry. India is home to some 1.36 billion poor. The world is getting worse, but India will be the worst. The only solution is to send the left over 200 million Muslims to Pakland with Kashmir package.

This news item has nothing to do with the above news, but the reason I want to post it here is to show to the Pakistani readers that people are not selectively lathi charged in India based on religion or region.
Any one posing a danger to law and order can be at the receiving end of the police/state machinery.
Pls do not misunderstand, this does not mean I approve of these measures to quell dissent. I believe in non violence.

Pakistan army did that in Swat, Indian army is doing it in Jammu and Kashmir. These actions are not based on anyone's religion. Kashmir has 4 million Muslims. India has 150 million Muslims. Ever wonder why this isue ocurs only in Kashmir and there has been no communal riot in India in past 9 years? It is because Pakistan pushes terrorists into India since things are coming to normal.
Secondly what does freedom of worship have to do with this. No-one has prevented the 150 million Muslims from worshipping as they se fit. Finally secularism refers to the fact that the organs of state will not discriminate in favor or against anyone on the basis of their religion. Here are some facts you may want to consider: - India's prime minister is a non-Hindu (he is a Sikh) - India's defence minister (to whom Indian COAS reports) is a non-Hindu (he is a Christian) - India's Vice President is a non-Hindu (he is a Muslim) - India's home minister (equivalent to PAkistan's interiro minister and to whom RAW reports to) is a non Hindu (he is an atheist). - India's chief justice of Supreme court is a non-Hindu (he is a Parsi)
In the past India has had 3 Muslim Presidents, Muslim COAS and Muslim Chief justice of Supreme court Secularism is not just a theoretical concept in India it is being practiced.
Compare that to Pakistan where the law will not permit a non-Muslim to become President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Supreme Court or COAS. The world does not ned glasses. It can see the difference which is very clear and obvious.
o shame on this type of democracy, by the occupied Kashmir is only state in India. Let Kashmiris decide by ballot not by getting beaten up, raped, killed and tortured daily by 700,000 army and para military.
