The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has suspended penalty-corner specialist Sohail Abbas for the second time after he skipped the national team’s training camp for the upcoming European tour.

Abbas’ department, Wapda, has also formed a three-member committee that includes members from the department’s sports board, Saghir Ahmed, Munawar Bhutta and Waheed Mirza, to probe his absence. Meanwhile, the PHF is also planning to take further disciplinary action after they receive the committee’s report.

Earlier, the PHF sacked senior players for the Azlan Shah Cup tournament including Abbas, Rehan Butt and Shakeel Abbasi for Pakistan’s poor showing at the hockey World Cup. In a twist of events, the federation then offered three-month honorary contracts to 25 players including the senior players.

Soon after Abbas along with some other players decided to play for a league in Bangladesh instead of taking part in the training camp in Karachi.

This was followed by the PHF secretary Asif Bajwa threatening to take action against Abbas if he did not show up for the camp before omitting him from the squad for the European tour.
