Similar to last year, we have some of the most entertaining films in Pakistani cinema leading the way, including Nabeel Qureshi’s Actor in Law, Azfar Jafri’s Janaan, and Mehreen Jabbar’s Dobara Phir Se. Last year, we saw Jami Mahmood’s Moor make an upset and win both the Best Director and Best Film categories. And while the favourite this year is definitely Actor In Law, we might see Janaan or Mah-e-Mir take the cake.
In the acting categories, Mahira Khan is always a favourite so it won’t be surprising if she wins the Best Actress for Ho Mann Jahaan. But while it may be quite predictable to see that, it’s perhaps time to let other talents, such as Saba Qamar or Sanam Saeed, come forward. Only time will tell.
Exceptional performance: 90 high-achieving CIE students to get awards
Also, it’s time we admit Fahad Mustafa is our new top actor. Establishing himself at the top of the industry in no time, Fahad is certainly a favorite this year. Then, he is also nominated for Mah-e-Mir so it would be a huge surprise not to see him bag the award.
Last year also saw some quality music being featured in films. While Atif Aslam is obviously the favourite to win for Dil Dancer, we feel the track wasn’t the best showcase for the Aadat singer. Maybe this time around, Asrar (for Funkaran in Actor In Law) or Rajab Ali (for Yeh Dhuan in Mah-e-Mir) may come out victorious.
In the Best Female Singer category, with names like Aima Baig and Hania Aslam making their LSA debuts, we have quite a load of new talent. While it would be great to see Shreya Ghoshal bag the award for Janaan’s title track, which was one of the best songs of the year, it doesn’t seem possible, considering the political tensions between India and Pakistan. So, consider Zeb Bangash winning a second LSA or we’ll see a first-time winner, and that’s definitely a positive thing.
When it comes to music albums, we have got Tehzeeb Foundation’s Indus Raag 2, Book of Sibt by Sibti, You by The Sketches, and Uzair Jaswal and Mooro’s debut album Na Bhulana and Peheli, respectively. From little eccentric minimalist combinations to full-on classical, this is a nomination class to remember. It’s also interesting that the nominees are totally different from last year’s Best Album contenders. It certainly shows the diversity of music and the variety of artists in our industry.
From Humsafar to Raees: Mahira Khan’s journey to stardom
The best song of 2016 was, hands down, Umair Jaswal and Ahmed Jahanzeb’s Khaki Banda from Coke Studio season nine. And if that doesn’t win the award, it will be a travesty. A travesty, we tell you.
With 28 categories announced, the LSAs will be another fun night to remember as it will see who establishes themselves at the top of the mountain.
