Turkish warplane crashes near airport in southeast

The F-16 had left an air base in Diyarbakir for a training flight when it fell shortly after take-off

DIYARBAKIR, TURKEY: A Turkish fighter jet crashed near an airport in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir on Monday, the military said, but the pilot was able to safely eject from the plane.

The F-16 warplane had left an air base in Diyarbakir for a training flight when it fell shortly after take-off in a village nearby, Dogan news agency reported.

Before the crash, the pilot escaped the plane using the ejector seat, the armed forces said, quoted by the CNN Turk broadcaster.

The agency said the pilot was in "good health" but had been taken to hospital after the crash.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
