Space movies have become a hot genre as of late. From films to television series, everyone is exploring it in their own way and, simultaneously, cashing in on the trend. While the latest offering Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is due on December 16, HBO is prepping for a new space drama as well. Both projects have one name in common: JJ Abrams.

Hot off the wheels of Westworld’s first season, HBO is set to reteam with Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions banner to develop Glare, The Hollywood Reporter stated.

Glare is an hour-long drama exploring colonisation of another planet, which will be penned by Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón, who previously wrote the 2013 Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer, Enemy.

This marks Abram’s latest foray into television. The prolific producer (Star Wars, Star Trek, Lost) most recently exec produced Westworld for the premium cable network. The drama has been renewed for a second season due in 2018. Abrams’ TV credits also include Showtime’s short-lived music drama Roadies, Hulu’s limited drama 11.22.63 and CBS’ Person of Interest, which ended its run earlier this year.

Interestingly, HBO is not the only network venturing into space. Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) recently ordered an animated comedy called Final Space; Netflix is reviving Lost in Space; and Syfy has found success with The Expanse, which takes place 200 years in the future and after mankind has colonised the solar system. (Then there’s the theory that Westworld is set on another planet.)
