Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) started flight operations to Barcelona on Sunday.

A B-777 aircraft left for the Spanish city via Paris from Benazir Bhutto International Airport this morning, a press release from the airline stated.

All festivities planned earlier for the launch of the flight were cancelled following a crash in Abbottabad. A PIA PK-661 flight from Chitral to the federal capital crashed on December 7 killing all 47 on board.

In a somber mood PIA CEO Bernd Hildenbrand saw off the passengers. Expressing his views on they occasion, Hildenbrand said with the resumption of flights to Barcelona, after a gap of nearly two years, passengers will have a convenient link between Pakistan and Spain.

PIA will operate two weekly flights to Barcelona, one each from Islamabad and Lahore, operating on Sundays and Tuesdays.

Last month, Hildenbrand announced PIA is looking to increase its fleet size to 60 aircraft by 2020 and start flights to Barcelona, Leipzig, Salalah and Bangkok.

“PIA is targeting to have a fleet of 60 aircraft by 2020,” said Bernd Hildenbrand, the CEO, while speaking at a weekly meeting in Rotari Club Karachi. “In addition to increasing domestic flights, PIA is planning to increase its flights to Paris, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Jeddah, Beijing and Toronto while starting new flights to Barcelona, Leipzig, Salalah and Bangkok," he added.
