Police official arrested for using recovered car

The car had been recovered in May 2010 but was never entered into records.

ISLAMABAD: An official of the city police was suspended and booked for not showing a recovered car in police records and instead keeping it in his personal use.

Sub Inspector Aslam Kalyar, deputed at the Shehzad Town police, was booked after a departmental inquiry revealed the allegations him to be true. He was booked in a criminal case.

Police sources said the SSP (Operations) Tahir Alam Khan had ordered an inquiry into the allegations against Kalyar that a Suzuki Mehran in his personal use was recovered from a suspect in May 2010. The inquiry team found that the registration book of the car was tampered with.

Kalyar, in a raid, had impounded the Mehran along with a Suzuki pick up van. Two men were arrested. While the van details were entered in the police records, Kalyar never revealed that he had, in fact, recovered two cars.

He never put the Mehran on record. Sources alleged Kalyar had also taken bribes from the suspects for keeping the car in his use and later returning it to them. However the two suspects were found guilty and sent to jail. So Kalyar kept using the car. The inquiry ordered by the SSP found that the car had been tampered with. He also failed to prove his ownership of the vehicle.

In light of the evidence, the Station House Officer of the Shehzad Town booked Kalyar in a criminal case.

Police took a fresh physical remand of the suspect on Friday for two days from a court to complete their investigations. A police official said.
