FAISALABAD: Comprehensive and coordinated industrial development is imperative to fully exploit the opportunities emerging in the wake of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) programme and related projects, suggested Engineer Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, President of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI).

Speaking at a workshop on “Industrial policy and census” organised by the Industries, Commerce and Investment Department of Punjab government on Friday, Sheikh said the mega CPEC project would no doubt be a game changer for the entire region.

However, “we could not afford to ignore such unique opportunities which have the potential to transform Pakistan into a dynamic and vibrant business and industrial hub of the region; in this connection, conscious efforts should be initiated without any hesitation.”

He asked the government to immediately dismantle all hurdles hampering industrial development in Punjab by promoting pro-industry culture in all the government and semi-government departments dealing with industries.

Sheikh also called electricity and gas tariffs the highest for Pakistan industries compared to neighbouring and regional countries.

Though the government was building new power plants to do away with energy shortages, the exports were going down primarily because of high cost of doing business, which left exporters uncompetitive in international markets, he said.
