KARACHI: Abdul Jabbar Tunio, the 270-kilogramme man suffering from morbid obesity, is struggling for his life as he has been put on a ventilator now.

According to Aleem Ahmed, an attendant of the ailing patient, they have been running from pillar to post but the doctors and paramedics are uninterested in caring for the patient.

Obesity threatens 270kg Pakistani man’s life

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took notice of Tunio's condition, bringing delight among the patient's family. He was shifted from a private hospital of Larkana to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Karachi. However, his attendants claim he is on a ventilator now and is not being properly looked after. "Bilawal Bhutto's notice was merely a political gimmick," said Ahmed. "They [doctors] are just saying that it is serious case." He said that some doctors had suggested to refer the case to either Aga Khan Hospital or Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation but all in vain.

On the other hand, a doctor who heads the ward where Tunio is admitted said the patient is in critical condition. "The medical board has also suggested that this case be referred to urology," he said.

Meanwhile, an official working at Bilawal House denied that they had suggested the family to bring the patient to Karachi. In response, the family members showed the telephonic and WhatsApp record with Bilawal House which proves otherwise. "It would have been good if we had had him treated in a private hospital in Larkana," said an attendant. "We made a mistake in reposing our trust in Bilawal's notice."
