A drop in the ocean: World Water Day event highlights importance of conservation

25 new filtration plants to be established, according to WSSP

PESHAWAR: World Water Day was celebrated on Monday, a day early by Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar.

The theme for 2016 is water and jobs, aimed to create awareness among the public about the importance of conserving water reservoirs for coming generations. Water & Sanitation (WatSan) Cell, Local government & Rural Development department, Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) and WASH Cluster marked the occasion at a joint ceremony on Monday, stated a press release.

A seminar was arranged at the Local Governance School in Hayatabad. Experts presented research on the current situation and challenges faced by the water sector.

According to the press release, WSSP runs 563 tube wells and provides clean drinking water to consumers in four zones of the provincial capital. So far, 28 overhead water reservoirs have been renovated and 25 others are in the process of the same.

Eleven water filtration plants have been fixed and 25 new ones will be established. WSSP replaced 86.64 kilometres of rusted pipe line with HDPE pipes and installed chlorinators at 20 tube wells.

Representatives of the local government, public health engineering and education departments, universities, NGOs, IRC and UNICEF attended the event.
