Govt issues policy guidelines for foreign appointments

New guidelines stress the tenure of two years fixed for each foreign post will not be extended

The federal government issued on Saturday policy guidelines for foreign appointments and postings in Pakistani missions abroad and against Pakistan's seats in international, multilateral and regional organisations.

Under the guidelines approved by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, it has been made incumbent upon the concerned ministry and division to ensure that the selection process is completely transparent and absolutely merit based.

According to the guidelines, all posts that are vacant in foreign countries or are likely to become vacant within one year will be circulated amongst officers of the identified services, cadres and occupational groups. "The eligibility criteria in terms of educational qualification, experience and age must be specified," the document read.

Furthere, the eligible officers will also have to undergo a written test and an interview for the foreign posting.

The guidelines stressed that the tenure of two years that has been fixed for each foreign post shall be strictly followed and will not under any circumstances be extended.
