Saving cotton crop: Farmers receive training

MUZAFFARGARH: Agriculture officials have started training ginners and farmers, as the Punjab government ordered to get rid of pink bollworm that weakens cotton fibre and reduces production, causing losses worth billions of rupees. District Officer Agriculture extension Mahr Abid Hussain said the pink bollworm-induced loss could be prevented through a coordinated strategy. Hussain said farmers should complete removal of cotton stubs from fields and destroy them by January 31 to save the next crop. Following the stubs’ removal, farmers shall plough the fields to kill bollworm pupae. Ginners should also destroy cotton trash at their cotton factories and roadsides to kill any bollworm present in trash. Cotton sticks shall be cut from six inch deep to prevent sprouting in spring.
