Quaid-e-Azam Trophy: Winning-by-an-innings galore on day three

NBP, HBL, WAPDA all register convincing wins in fourth round

KARACHI: Fast bowler Ahmed Jamal and Faheem Ashraf picked up eight wickets between them in the second innings to help NBP to their third Pool B win as they thrashed hosts Rawalpindi by an innings and 79 runs at the Pindi Stadium on the third day of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy’s fourth round. 

Rawalpindi resumed the day on 188-7 in reply to NBP’s first-innings total of 453 and were bowled out for 236 in 64 overs. Usman Saeed top-scored for the hosts with 61 runs off 96 balls while Jamal claimed five scalps as Faheem and Ziaul Haq took two wickets apiece.

NBP then enforced the follow-on and the move paid off as Rawalpindi were bundled out for 138 in 41.3 overs as this time it was Faheem who claimed five scalps while Jamal took three wickets.

The win helped NBP stretch their lead at the top of Pool B as they took their points-tally to 33 from four matches.

At the LCCA Ground in Lahore, HBL, who were recently promoted to the top tier, earned their first win of the season as they defeated hosts Lahore by an innings and 56 runs.

Lahore, who were in their second innings, started the day on 98-4, trailing HBL by 232 runs, but their resistance didn’t last long as they were dismissed for 186. Mohammad Waheed scored 68 runs as Shahid Afridi claimed three wickets, while first-innings hero Umar Gul, who took seven wickets on Tuesday, added two wickets to his tally.

Meanwhile, Wapda also joined the winning-by-an-innings group at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot as they defeated Fata by an innings and four runs.

Fata, who were in their first innings, started the day on 217-8 in reply to Wapda’s first-innings total of 440 but only added 33 runs to their overnight score before folding for 250 runs. Khushdil Shah scored an eventful 159-ball 122, laced with 15 boundaries and two sixes, while Waqas Maqsood, Zulfiqar Babar and Azhar Attari claimed three wickets apiece.

Wapda enforced the follow-on, which saw Fata being dismissed for 186 as Waqas bagged four scalps while Babar picked up two wickets to complete the rout.
