KARACHI:

Pakistan’s top ranked player Nasir Iqbal was knocked out of the PSA Men’s World Championship by Egypt’s Fares Dessouki in straight games in the US.

Dessouki, ranked number 18 in the world, swept Iqbal aside 11-7, 11-3, 11-7. The Bannu-born Iqbal, who had recently won the Serena Hotels Championship event in Pakistan, was advised by the doctors not to take part in the World Open due to medical reasons.

He initially withdrew from the tournament, but later went back on his decision upon the Pakistan Squash Federation’s insistence, who wanted him to gain ranking points.

Iqbal is currently ranked 44th in the world and had received direct entry into the World Championship without having to go through the qualifiers.
