ISLAMABAD:

Key aides of US President Barack Obama have appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate a political end to a deadly insurgency in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director South Asian Affairs Peter Lavoy and Acting Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Laurel Miller also acknowledged Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism.

The two diplomats wrapped up their two-day visit to Islamabad on Wednesday where they met civil and military authorities and discussed wide-ranging issues, including bilateral ties as well as current regional security situation.

According to a statement issued by the US Embassy, Lavoy and Miller reiterated Washington’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices Pakistan has made in the fight against terrorism.

“The United States and Pakistan have a long-term bilateral partnership marked by shared interests, including the advancement of democracy, peace, security, and economic development,” the statement added.

A separate statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office said Miller called on Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi.

Fatemi highlighted Premier Nawaz’s policy of a peaceful neighbourhood and non-interference in the region, and reiterated Pakistan’s desire to build a constructive and trust-based relationship with Afghanistan.

He stressed that peace in Afghanistan was vital for peace and stability in the region, and highlighted Pakistan’s contribution towards facilitating an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

Fatemi also outlined the progress achieved by Pakistan against terrorist groups as a result of Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

The US envoy appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan, in line with its policy for a peaceful neighbourhood. She also acknowledged the huge sacrifices made by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and welcomed its resolute and concerted efforts against this common threat.

Other issues of bilateral and regional importance were also discussed during the meeting, which was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere.
